Advantages: Great taste, good price
Disadvantages: None unless you don't like being seen with value items in your basket!
As you may know I am currently recovering from Swine Flu. Dave brought it back from Scotland and shared it with me - how kind! It's a good job I love him!
Anyway we did a bit of shopping before he went back to Edinburgh and I decided to get one of two treats for when I was on my own and feeling a bit sorry for myself. I wanted something nice but not too high on sugar and calories as I do find it far too easy to think - oh, I'm not very well I will eat what I like to cheer myself up - not a good idea where I am concerned!
One of the things I decided to buy was a packet of Tesco Value Digestive Biscuits. I like digestives for eating on their own, dunking or eating with cheese and I wanted to see if the Tesco value ones were any good.
I love chocolate digestives as well but I thought I could do without the extra calories that the chocolate would bring!
The Cost
A 400g packet of Tesco Value Digestive Biscuits cost me just 31p and for that I got about 25 biscuits. I must admit I consider that a bargain so that's a good start.
For comparison purposes a 500g packet of Tesco's own brand digestives cost 52p and a 500g packet of McVities digestives cost 70p
The Packaging
These biscuits come in the now recognisable Tesco Value wrapping with the red and blue logo on the top right. There is a picture of the biscuits on the front together with the name of the product and the basic nutritional information expressed as a percentage of the recommended adult daily allowance.
On the back of the packet there is a full list of ingredients, detailed nutritional information, allergy advice and storage instructions.
Regarding the allergy advice - the biscuits contain wheat and gluten and although they are prepared to a recipe without nuts and made in a nut free environment but the biscuits cannot be guaranteed nut free. That sounds weird to me - where could the nuts have come from?
The Biscuits
I opened the biscuits by tearing the red strip around the packet thus opening the same without damaging the biscuits inside. I could then put the biscuits into the airtight biscuit tin to keep them fresh.
The smell was very nice - it is difficult to describe but it was a nice freshly cooked sort of smell.
The biscuits are circular in shape and are about two and a half inches long in diameter and they look just as good as any of the more expensive brands of digestives.
The Taste
The biscuits are nice and crumbly with a rich taste. They tasted great on their own or dunked in my tea and again they were just as good as any others I have tried. I also like digestives lightly buttered with a bit of low fat cheese as well and these were great for that as well.
The Nutritional Information
It makes sense to give the nutritional information expressed per biscuit so that's what I will do.
Calories 75
Protein 1.1g
Carbohydrate 9.9g
Of which sugars 2.3g
Fat 3.5g
Of which saturates 1.6g
Fibre 0.5g
Salt 0.2g
They are also suitable for vegetarians.
Conclusion
I am very impressed with these biscuits - they are just as good as any of the branded versions either Tesco's own or McVities. I do however limit the amount I eat as the calorie, sugar and fat content are quite high - although not as bad as if they were chocolate coated!
I would certainly buy these again and will remember them when I need digestives for a cheesecake base.
Summary: An excellent digestive
