Advantages: Very cheap
Disadvantages: Very full of sugar!
So I seem to have become somewhat of a champion of the Tesco Value brand of late!
My latest discovery occurred when I decided that there was absolutely nothing that took my fancy in the sweetie aisle; cue dramatic huffing and puffing.
Tucked away on the bottom shelf, I notice a 200g pack of Tesco 'Fun Fruits' for 32 of my English pennies. "I'm 'aving that!" I declare.
* * * * * *
Admittedly the Value packaging doesn't really work well with the title 'fun fruits'. They look OK I guess... not the life and soul of my kitchen cupboard parties though. Perhaps more of a wallflower.
These sweets are actually those foamy shapes (think shrimps), and each pack contains strawberries, oranges, and the old classic; bananas.
Each sweet is a fair size - I'd say the oranges and strawberries are roughly similar diameter to that of a 2 pence coin.
I have to confess that I thought these were going to be really horrible, but I was actually rather surprised to find the opposite.
Although the flavouring seems very artificial, the strawberry tasted pleasant and reminiscent enough of strawberry, same goes for the banana (I actually hate anything banana flavoured so was really surprised at liking this one). The only one that I felt was a slight let down was the orange flavoured one, as I thought it was just a bit too much of a chemical-based taste & bit of a strange aftertaste.
Even though I say that, I still polished off the whole bag!
As they're cheap 'foam' sweets, I was expecting them to be rock solid, but actually found they were just right.
They didn't seem to go hard too quickly either... even though they had the grand total of 2 days to achieve this before ending up in my tum; [therefore I cannot comment accurately on their longevity over the course of, say, a week]!
I was a little confused by the strange taste of the orange ones, as the ingredients aren't nearly as full of the rubbish and colourings that I was expecting to see:
Sugar, Glucose Syrup, Maize Starch, Dextrose, Water, Beef Gelatine, Colours (Curcumin, Beetroot Red), Natural Flavouring.
Maybe its just me...
Per 100g these little monkeys contain:
Calories - 380
Sugar - 90.1g *faints*
Fat - 0.1g
Saturates - 0g
Sodium - Trace
So if you fancy chomping the whole bag, there is always the possibility of a sugar induced coma!!!
That aside, I think for the occasional treat these are great. Especially as they're so cheap - if you find that you're not keen on them, you've only spent 32p!
Summary: Great for the occasional sugar overload.
