Advantages: Delicious, you wouldn't know it wasn't Lyles if you hadn't seen the jar

Disadvantages: The lid can get sticky and hard to remove sometimes

My latest purchase from the Tesco Value range was this Golden Syrup and at just 77p for a jar containing 680g of syrup I have to say it's one of the bargains of the range.

I mainly use syrup for baking, although do on occasion stir a little into porridge or if I'm feeling particularly naughty I'll spread a couple of crumpets with it and allow the sticky syrup to melt through the hot crumpet. Yum!

This Value Golden Syrup is identical to the more widely used Lyles brand in taste and texture, I think it's perhaps a tiny bit thinner but haven't used any syrup in some time so this could well be a bit of brand snobbery talking as I cannot physically compere them.

My only complaint with it is that because the lid is a metal screw top it can become stuck sometimes, I have arthritis in my hands and if it's in a sticky mood then I have real problems. It's only because the syrup gets between the gaps in the thread of the screw top and if you are a very regular user of syrup then this shouldn't be a problem, it's when the syrup has been left awhile and dries within the grooves.

The syrup itself tastes exactly the same as the Lyles version; sweet and sugary with a slight treacle-like tinge. It spreads well, sticks to the spoon in the same fashion as other syrups and even pours well out of the glass jar if you need a larger or less precise quantity.

Last night I used it to make a Golden Syrup Sponge with fantastic results and a couple of nights ago I substituted it for treacle in some rhubarb and ginger muffins, which resulted in a delicious light taste and texture rather than the heaviness you experience when using treacle.

I have used this in porridge too, in many things actually and I simply cannot differentiate between this and Lyles which costs more for a smaller quantity.

Summary: Another excellent product from the Tesco Value range - slash your baking costs!

I like the fact that it comes in a jar and is mega cheap! I can't stand dented tins of Lyle stuff when the lid sticks down or worse, when the lid just refuses to come off after months of use.

77p for a 680g jar? That's great. Next time I make some baked goods the family I'll have to consider using this instead of Lyle's Golden Syrup!
