Advantages: cheap

Disadvantages: not much horseradish

Horseradish is something you can always find in my fridge with a huge backup stock in the cupboard as well. I'm just addicted to it and use it on almost everything; be it a beef sandwich, roasted potatoes and parsnips and of course potato mash

My usual brand is Coleman's but after having several great experiences with Tesco Value I gave the own brand Horseradish Sauce a try.

Unfortunately it is a hit and miss with the own brand products and this here was more of a miss than a hit. For me the sauce was way too runny and didn't contain enough horseradish.

Look & Taste

Directly after opening I was surprised of how runny the sauce was. I actually checked the 'best use before' date to see if it was still ok. Well, it was so I tried it with some pork and roasted potatoes.

It was immediately clear that this was more a mayonnaise with bits of horseradish than a real horseradish sauce. I really missed this sharp taste and the spiciness that I'm used from my usual brand. If you are more for the mild variety this here could be your kind of thing but for me it was a bit too bland.

The texture didn't convince me too, it was too runny with rather big bits of chewy horseradish in the mayonnaise.

So my conclusion is that it was alright to eat but I just expected something else. I'm not going to buy the Tesco Value sauce again and from now on I'll stick to my Coleman's horseradish as the taste is just better and richer and it's not so runny.

Ingredients & Nutrition

For a horseradish sauce the Tesco Value sauce contains surprisingly little horseradish, only 5.8% in total. And unfortunately you can easily taste that lack too. The lack of horseradish is 'compensated' by a quite high amount of chemicals like preservatives, flavourings and colourings. I don't know if they are really needed in such a simple thing as horseradish sauce and I definitely prefer a more natural version.

* Water, Sugar, Vegetable Oil, Spirit Vinegar, Horseradish (5%), Salt, Double Cream, Acetic Acid, Dried skimmed Milk, Horseradish Powder, Dried Pasteurised Egg, Stabilisers, Mustard Flour, Colour, Flavouring, Acidity Regulator, Preservatives

When I checked the nutrition values on the front of the jar I was literately shocked; a high amount of sugar, fat and calories was nothing that I expected from it. More Horseradish and less sugar would have been a good idea.

These are the nutrition levels for 1 tablespoon of the sauce ( roughly 15g )
* 20 Calories - 1%
* 2.1g Sugar - 2%
* 1.1g Fat - 2%
* 0.2g Saturates - 1%
* 0.5g Salt - 8%
------------------

Price & Value

The horseradish sauce comes in a 165g jar and will cost you about 60 pence; admittedly that is quite cheap given that the sauce lasts for ages. But unfortunately it wasn't my taste; I prefer more horseradish and less sauce to enjoy my roast dinner. It's not a bad product but as it was absolutely not my taste I cannot really recommend it. Give it a go if normal horseradish is too hot and spicy for you.

For me it's only 05 out of 10!
