When I was growing up we never had biscuits that were fancy in my house. We always had digestives and rich tea and custard creams and the like if we were very lucky. Not because my Mother was tight. It was to slow us down munching them as quick as she purchased them. The only time we had 'posh' ones laid out was when we had visitors. I remember eating one or two in company as not to get told off and praying the guests wouldn't eat them all and then Mum would put them in the kitchen and I would pinch the lot when no one was looking. One of the biscuits I loved growing up was jaffa cakes and when I eat them not only do I like them lots but they evoke nice, special memories ... Read the complete review

Any regular readers of my reviews will be aware by now that I am a huge lover of biscuits and cakes and anything that is nice and sweet really, such is the control that my sweet tooth has over me! I have not been too well recently and so my partner has taken over a few of the domestic duties that need done. One of these is shopping for food and household items. Because the nearest supermarket to our house is a very huge branch of 'Tesco Extra' this of course is where he ended up at the weekend to get our shopping. I know I shouldn't grumble because it saved me going out for the shopping but I could really never be described as the biggest fan of ... Read the complete review

I have been known to devour an entire pack of Jaffa Cakes in one sitting. Yes that is right, that's 24 biscuits in one go. They don't count as a cake and they don't quite come under biscuit. It's a merge of the two, which makes it alright to eats lots in one go! McVities are usually the make I plump for, though aren't Jaffa Cakes expensive? They last a day in my house and it always seems like such a terrific waste. Tesco have managed to corner the price market here by offering the same number of cakes for under forty pence. That is not bad going actually. All of their value biscuits have pleased me so far, particularly the humble custard cream and ... Read the complete review

We've always had McVities or Tescos own Jaffa Cakes in our house but when we went shopping a few months ago we couldn't believe the difference in price! For 24 McVities Jaffa Cakes, you will pay £1.62, for 24 Tesco value Jaffa Cakes you will pay just 38p which is less than a quarter of the price! We decided to give these a go and I'm glad we did. The Jaffa Cakes come in the usual bog standard packaging, predominantly white with the Tesco Value writing and a simple picture of the product. Inside, the Jaffa Cakes come wrapped in celophane-2 packs of 12. I found this useful, as with a box this size you are unlikely to eat them all in a couple of days meaning ... Read the complete review

I am a firm believer in supermarket alternatives to costly big name brands in terms of simple products, such as baked beans, tinned tomatoes, mayonnaise, potatoes, even plain biscuits like digestives and rich tea. Most 'value' 'basics' range products are edible in some circumstances (e.g. kids parties, new year's parties), but often more complex processed products, like cornflakes, sacrifice quite significantly on quality in favour of cheapness. *Look* The usual simple Tesco value box, with a white background, red and blue text and image of the products. I like this unpretentious packaging, though it might be embarrassing to present to guests. ... Read the complete review
