Advantages: cheap
Disadvantages: not as good as branded ones
Tesco Jaffa cakes reminded me very much of their more expensive counterpart nade by McVities.
Jaffa Cakes are biscuits which are officially classified as cakes because there is VAT on chocolate biscuits but not on cakes. (There was a discussion involving McVitie's and the VAT people sometime ago.) Apparently their is a strict definition that determined ehether something is a cake, or a biscuit.
A biscuit goes soft when it is stale and a cake goes hard when it's stale. So, in my opinion these are cakes. Not that I kept mine long enough to discover if this was the case.
Because of this ruling, the price of Tesco Jaffa Cakes is also slightly lower. These cake/biscuits have a spongey bottom, a filling of orange flavoured sticky stuff and a chocolate topping.
This is is exactly the same as the more expensive variety. Howerver, although edible and quite pleasant, the cheaper ones are thinner, harder and chewier than the original ones.
Having said that, they are still woth buying.
Back in 2007 Tesco was ordered to withdraw its Jaffa Cakes because they contained milk that wasan't shown on the label. However, today's stringent labelling shows correct information.
One Jaffa cake weighs 12g and has 44 calories and 1.1g of fat. So, one is okay but if you are watching your diet there is quite a lot of fat in these.
Would I buy these again? Yes, I would because they are a cheap alternative but they are not quite as good as the branded variety which are softer, have more filling and thicker chocolate.
Summary: Great value
