... malt loaf comes packaged in the standard white value pack with the blue striped flashing , image of the product and red border. It is definitely much smaller than the standard malt loaves like Soreen and it stands out next to the deeper colours of their packaging. The crust of the loaf is dark but the actual bread of the loaf is actually a little lighter to the bread of other more expensive malt loaves. The raisins are clearly visible in the bread. Premium Review Tesco Value Malt Loaf: It's Claggy! (449 words)
by - written on 15/06/09 (Very useful, 69 readings)

I grew up in Preston and in those years malt loaf was something my mum used to dish up - except that she didn't call it malt loaf. "D'ya want some claggy?" She would offer when my brother and I came in from playing in the fields. The answer was invariably yes (as we were scrawny little scraps who were always hungry because we spent a lot of the time running wild outside). We would wash it down with gulps of warm dandelion and burdock and be off again. 'Claggy' was a staple of my childhood together with beans on toast, jaffa cakes and supermousse. Tesco Value Malt Loaf seems to me to be an authentic version of the malt loaf I ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Tea with Grandma (604 words)

Visiting Grandma on a Sunday, always consisted of "High Tea" at about 4pm. Hard boiled eggs, silverskin onions, sliced meat, buttered finger rolls, chocolate eclairs and Mr Kipling fondant fancies......and malt loaf with a slab of butter on each slice. All served on the Sunday best china, with doilies where appropriate, and those net covers to stop the flies. Grandma would prepare this tea early in the morning.....and therefore it sat, looking lovely, for most of the day. We very quickly learned that if it was a hot day, you had to be careful about what you ate at tea-time.......fresh cream eclairs were obviously a no-go as were some of the sliced ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Tesco Value Malt Loaf: Tesco Value shines again! (258 words)

Undoubtedly it was the price that first drew our attention to this loaf, and if you can find it, conveniently nestled in at the bottom of the shelf almost hidden from view, I highly recommend you try it. Coming in at an astonishingly cheap 18 pence (at the time of writing), there is an immediate "buy me" appeal of this malt loaf. When you further consider that this malt loaf is less than half the price of the other well known brand, the value shines even more, and the descision becomes a no brainer. Other than the dissapointing "Tesco Value" brand image, and unattractive packaging, there is nothing negative about this product ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review 18p Malt Loaf - And It Tastes Good! (212 words)

When I saw that Soreen Malt Loaf was on offer in Tesco this week at two for £1 I thought I'd get away with it but no, the Mrs insisted that I had to try value malt loaf as part of our economy drive too. I was not amused, what's wrong with 50p for a nice malt loaf?!! This cost 18p though which I suppose is a lot less in the grand scheme of things so I relented (only so as not to cause a scene mind) and agreed I'd give it a go. Cutting this up was as hard as it is with the Soreen but that's just a malt loaf thing. I found that carving it like I do with my usual brand worked fine. Then I spread over some buttery spread and set to work to see if ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Tesco Value Malt Loaf: A funny looking malt loaf to be sure lol (859 words)

At 18p and loving malt loaf when I saw this I just had to buy it and try it of course! I love Tesco's supermarket and usually find myself bumbling about and quite often lately I will buy their own cheaper brands to try out as I don't lose much if things are not so good and quite often they actually are! I was Particularly interested in trying this malt loaf simply because I had a couple of Soreen malt loafs a while back and they tasted burnt and I was really put off buying Soreen again! They were just awful and since then I haven't bought them and I have been missing my malty treat! The Packaging.... White plastic wrapper and on the front I'm told ...  Read the complete review
