Advantages: Cheap and not awful just not for me
Disadvantages: Odd colour and not fruity, spicy or malty enough and it's far too soggy!
At 18p and loving malt loaf when I saw this I just had to buy it and try it of course! I love Tesco's supermarket and usually find myself bumbling about and quite often lately I will buy their own cheaper brands to try out as I don't lose much if things are not so good and quite often they actually are! I was Particularly interested in trying this malt loaf simply because I had a couple of Soreen malt loafs a while back and they tasted burnt and I was really put off buying Soreen again! They were just awful and since then I haven't bought them and I have been missing my malty treat!
The Packaging....
White plastic wrapper and on the front I'm told it's Tesco value and that it's Malt Loaf (fruited malt loaf). There is a picture of malt loaf on the front and under that I'm told it's vegetarian and suitable for home freezing and then beside that there is an at a glance nutritional chart. On the back of the packet once again I'm told what it is, freezing guidelines and how to defrost it, how to store it ingredients and allergy advice, nutritional information, packaging information, contact details for Tesco are given and finally there is a blue bar-code and the best before date is stamped on. There is no doubt from looking at the packaging that this is an economy product but there is alot of information on it.
The Malt Loaf....
Well first time I pulled it out of my wrapper I was a little disturbed to be honest lol. Light sort of golden brown colour it just wasn't what I was expecting at all! It's like quite a hard loaf to the touch and an oblong shape and rounded at the corners and is slightly shiny and I got no smell from it.
Slicing it isn't easy but then slicing a malt loaf never is in general. It cuts through the harder outer layer and squishes through the middle. The texture is quite gooey and a bit soggy to look at.
I eat mine with butter. You can as I read somewhere toast malt loaf though I have personally never tried to do this as I don't fancy it but if you did it'd literally take a minute or so with this as the slices would be rather small.
Taste wise. Well it's ok but nothing to rave about. It's a little too soggy in the middle and if you look at the slices when you've cut it you can really see that. There's not much fruit in it and it's encased in like a slightly crumbly bread but like I say it's all soggy and the only thing holding it together is the stiffer outer layer that at least you can grip hold of. It isn't very sweet and the reason I've always liked a malt loaf is because I eat it like a cake or biscuit but this doesn't taste like that. It isn't malty enough either and in fact is more like a tea cake if you forget the way it looks. There isn't that much taste to it at all but it isn't revolting.
In Conclusion....
Nothing to get over excited about but opinions in my house are incredibly mixed. I'm not overly keen on it as for me it just isn't tasty enough to justify eating it but my Mum and Step Dad adore the stuff and just the other day asked me to grab a few for them to stick in our freezer. They are more than happy to bung them in there for up to 3 months and it takes a couple of hours to defrost it (unless zapping it in microwave on defrost which is fine). Great thing to be able to do and excellent considering the price so if you get visitors last minute your not so stuck to give them something (so Mum says!). To store the product is simple as well. We keep ours covered up in a brand bin once opened and it stays fresh for a couple of day though in my house it's eaten well before then by the folks!
Like I say it isn't awful and if I need a bit of a sugar hit (and I mean a bit of a hit) then sure I'll munch some of this but it just isn't fruity enough for me, sweet or even the right colour lol
