I grew up in Preston and in those years malt loaf was something my mum used to dish up - except that she didn't call it malt loaf.

"D'ya want some claggy?" She would offer when my brother and I came in from playing in the fields. The answer was invariably yes (as we were scrawny little scraps who were always hungry because we spent a lot of the time running wild outside). We would wash it down with gulps of warm dandelion and burdock and be off again.

'Claggy' was a staple of my childhood together with beans on toast, jaffa cakes and supermousse.

Tesco Value Malt Loaf seems to me to be an authentic version of the malt loaf I used to enjoy.

Appearance
---------------

The malt loaf comes packaged in the standard white value pack with the blue striped flashing , image of the product and red border. It is definitely much smaller than the standard malt loaves like Soreen and it stands out next to the deeper colours of their packaging. The crust of the loaf is dark but the actual bread of the loaf is actually a little lighter to the bread of other more expensive malt loaves. The raisins are clearly visible in the bread.

Wheat Flour, Malted Barley Flour (15%), Water, Raisins (10%), Partially Inverted Refiners Syrup, Malted Barley Extract (3.5%), Salt, Dried Yeast, Preservative (Potassium Sorbate)

These are unremarkable - except for the fact that the value malt loaf seems to be vegan whilst the other malt loaves are merely vegetarian; Soreen contains whey.


Nutrition

A portion of malt loaf contains 95 calories, 4.2g sugar, 0.6g fat of which 0.3 is saturated and 0.3g salt.
I am not sure how large their portion is, but once you have sliced the loaf it compresses and leaves you with quite a small square. I would conclude that the malt loaf is actually quite a dense calorific snack.


Taste
--------

This malt loaf is actually preferred, by members of my family, to the more expensive brands (don't you just love that when it happens). It is full of flavour and tastes good on its own, with spread and jam and toasted with jam. I also really like to take it when I go fell walking because it gives you an energy boost.


Price
------

The malt loaf costs just 28p. Compared to the Soreen which costs 62p this is value for money, however you must remember that the value malt loaf is a little smaller.
