Advantages: Eight excellent flavours, less than half the price of their competitors
Disadvantages: They are a little hard immediately from the freezer
The Tesco Value range is going from strength to strength in my opinion, this week I have come across another gem in their Value Milk Lollies which cost 75p for eight Mini Milk sized lollies and are practically identical to their more expensive counterpart.
The lollies are individually wrapped in plain see through plastic wrapper, they look the same as Mini Milks and come in the same three flavours - chocolate, vanilla and strawberry.
My single complaint about these lollies is the fact that they are much more solid after removing from the freezer, this is easy to solve by simply leaving the lolly on the side for a minute or two before unwrapping but it's the one and only hint that these lollies are such a cheap product. Once they have been allowed to soften a little they are extremely similar to Mini Milks, having the light milky flavour that this kind of lolly is known for.
I have tried all three flavours and must say they are extremely refreshing with a light and pleasant flavour to each of the lollies. The vanilla one is my favourite as it seems to be the creamier of the three and the milkiness really comes through beautifully, it's not a strong vanilla taste but perfect for the undeveloped taste buds of small children who are surely the target audience for these lollies.
Actually all of the flavours are nicely muted, the strawberry flavour tastes of a weakened strawberry milkshake but in a very good way indeed. It's fruity but the milky flavour gives it a very creamier sensation, in fact the quality of this lolly in particular belies the very cheap price of them and it almost rivals the vanilla for my favourite of the three although the clean flavour of the vanilla just pips the more sugary strawberry one.
Chocolate isn't my favourite ice cream flavour at all, but in this pack they are quite decent because the chocolate hasn't been used too freely so the taste is nice and subtle. It shares the creamy texture of the other flavours and I like the fact that the chocolate doesn't linger for too long in my mouth, a common problem I find with chocolate ice creams.
Overall I cannot fault these lovely little lollies at all. Each flavour is lovely and considering they cost £1.25 less than the prettier Mini Milks there is a huge saving to be made. I have given these to my granddaughters' and none of them have commented on the fact that these lollies are different to Mini Milks, in fact the oldest is fully aware that these are the Value range as she mocked the boring blue and white box - she soon stopped laughing when I passed her a lolly though!
Summary: Yet another excellent Tesco Value product.

- 09/06/09 I adored the mini milks when I was little and Somerfields versions are really small on quantity and flop over when they are removed from the freezer. These ones sound ideal though! |

- 08/06/09 I've been buying the Sainsburys cheapo milk lollies for my god-children, but they were pretty disapointed (as was I.. ahem!) that you just get strawberry and vanilla in the box, will have to look these up next time I'm in Tesco, chocolate are the best ones! |
