Advantages: Great taste, bargain price, recyclable jar.
Disadvantages: Needs a little something added it to it.
I, like most people at present, am trying to save myself pennies wherever possible and this is one of the products that I have recently tried in this bid.
The sauce is provided in a glass jar with a very basic white, blue & red label which has the cooking instructions and the nutritional information.
The sauce is a tomato based sauce with added herbs and there is no mistaking that the majority of this sauce is made up of tomato puree and water as it does taste almost like the base of a pizza with some herbs added. I can taste the tomatoes and the herbs and the whole thing has quite a gentle taste without being too much. It is a fairly basic sauce but I do think that it tastes acceptable and considering the price it really is a bargain. I may occasionally add a few additional herbs to my sauce when cooking it just to give it an added kick. I think it's perfectly ample as a pasta sauce and with some pasta shells & pepperoni or salami it is a delicious meal once topped with cheese and baked in the oven.
Once I have poured out the sauce I tend to add water just to the bottom of the label and then shake it and pour this in with the original sauce to try and make it go a little further. It still tastes fine this way and it's not something that I'm going to stop doing just because this sauce is cheaper than my usual buy.
I have used this sauce as the basis of a few dishes such as lasagne, spaghetti bolognese, pasta bake etc and this is very cheap, at 36p per 440g jar so I can even afford to use two jars if I am cooking for a few people.
I would definitely recommend this, it's a fairly good tasting sauce which could require a few extra additional flavoursome herbs added to it but apart from that it's a great sauce at a great price & the jar is recyclable. I am rating this 4/5 based on taste, price & appearance.
Summary: A great tasting pasta sauce for use in a variety of dishes.

- 05/05/09 Great review, but not sure I'd eat the sauce...
Try frying onions, garlic and cheap chopped tomatoes from a can. Simmer for 30 minutes. Tastes nicer and will cost around the same. |
