Advantages: Very cheap, does the job

Disadvantages: Not the best quality but good enough

One of the quickest and easiest meals you can make in a hurry has to be pasta smothered in a tomato based sauce, and there is by no means a shortage of varieties available on the market. I am definitely a big of pasta and pasta bakes and frequently buy Dolmio or Homepride as they are guaranteed to provide a quality and tasty meal option. As many people have, since the credit crunch has taken hold on my finances, I have started to venture into the cheaper and value branded items from the shops and therefore thought I'd try the Tesco Value Pasta Sauce to mixed reviews.

The sauce itself is a basic tomato pasta sauce with mixed herbs thrown in for flavouring. It has a fairly viscous texture and lacks any strong flavouring, but does have a mild taste which is fairly pleasant. It is really no contest with the other branded competition, even the Tesco 'non-value' sauces are far more flavoured. The best thing about this sauce though has to be the price, it is by far the cheapest Pasta sauce I have seen available, costing 36p for a 440 gram jar. The other Tesco products which are of the 'non-value' variety are over twice the price at 97p for a 500 gram jar or 68p for the 320 gram size. Comparing these to the branded Dolmio products, it is even better value as they retail at about £1.99 for a Sauce jar.

For those of you who are more health conscious than I am, the calorific content of the Pasta Sauce is very low, being only 96 kcal for the whole jar and a fat content of only 3.6 grams. This I guess is not suprising given that the ingredients are fairly basic mainly consisting of Tomato Puree (46%) and other ingredients including pepper, water, starch, diced onion, etc.

Overall, this is a fairly basic Tomato based pasta sauce, just as you would imagine from the Tesco value range. However, even though the price is very cheap, it is not the greatest in taste and the texture leaves much to be desired. I will continue to buy this product in the future if only due to the fact the cost is so low, and would recommend it to others to try at least the once. I will therefore give this product a Dooyoo rating of three out of five stars.

Summary: Very basic

Think I'd rather open some passata and add my own onion, garlic, herbs etc..
