Advantages: They're exactly the same as McVities Rich Tea!
Disadvantages: ----------
I do like a biscuit with a cup of tea, but when it comes to dunking it has to be as plain a biscuit as possible and I find Rich Tea biscuits are the very best. Last week Tesco had no McVities Rich Tea so I decided to give their Value Rich Tea a try, thinking that if they were awful at least I'd only be wasting 25p and at least the birds would appreciate them crumbled up in the garden.
I must say, the birds were disappointed as I liked these biscuits so much that they didn't make it to the bird table and went straight into my biscuit tin.
The only difference I noticed with these Value Rich Tea to the more expensive McVities is the fact that these are smaller, they taste practically identical with the same light and moreish texture. They leave me with the same amount of crumbs down my shirt too, which perhaps says more about my messy eating habits than the biscuits themselves!
They have the recognisable vague coffee flavour, although please bear in mind that I am the only person I know who can detect the taste of coffee in Rich Tea biscuits generally so you might not find this! They have just the right level of sweetness and are flavoured rather subtly which makes them refreshingly bland in these days of chocolate with everything, but it's a blandness that Rich Tea lovers really don't mind and it also means it soaks up the flavours in your tea beautifully.
These Rich Tea biscuits dunk well, but please be aware than you only need to give them a very quick dunk as they dissolve rapidly especially when your drink is piping hot. My one pet hate is my biscuit falling into my drink as this means I have to throw away my tea because there is nothing worse than soggy crumbs in the bottom of your cup, this meant it was trial and error with these but eventually I realised that a quick 3 second dunk is all you need.
The biscuit will then soak up the tea perfectly and go all soft and delicious in my mouth, there really is nothing to separate these lovely little biscuits from their more expensive counterparts. There are 36 calories and 1.2 g of fat in these biscuits which is comparable to other brands of Rich Tea I've eaten.
I'll definitely buy them again in place of the McVities Rich Tea as it seems silly to pay so much more for a nicer wrapper, this one is the typical boring Value range wrapper which is fine for me as my biscuits go straight into the tin rather than sitting for everyone to admire the packet!
Summary: A delicious Rich Tea biscuit at a fraction of the price - just don't dunk for too long!

- 02/02/09 Problem with these is that you can eat 7 or 8 before you even realise it.
Agreed - there's no discernible difference between these and the more expensive ones. |

- 02/02/09 Nothing worse than a soggy biscuit at the bottom of your drink, I agree! |
