Advantages: Tasty and cheap
Disadvantages: Different sizes, unattractive tin
I recently made a visit to Tesco and was looking for something healthier than usual to snack on (anything other than chocolate!). I approached the tinned fruit aisle and came across some tins of Tesco Value sliced peaches in light syrup for 27p each. I don't usually 'do' supermarket brands as I'm sceptical of the quality but I decided to pick up a couple of tins as I figured you can't really go wrong with peach slices, especially at that price.
Other brands of same sized peach slices in Tesco range from 45p to 64p, so I made a nice little saving.
The peach slices come in a rather boring and unattractive 410g tin (250g drained weight) - white, with red writing and a blue picture of a peach, along with the 'Tesco Value' stamp. There isn't an easy to open ringpull on the lid, so you need to use a tin opener to get it open.
The peach slices come in light syrup, sadly there isn't an option of peach slices in fruit juice which is slightly better for the waistline than light syrup.
I found that all of the peach slices were of good quality and didn't contain any stones or skin. They came in different shapes and sizes - some long, some short, some fat, some thin - but they were all substantial and all tasted good so I didn't mind. The peach slices appeared orange, smooth, glossy and the majority of them looked plump and juicy.
I was suprised at how much light syrup was in the tin and had to drain some out before serving. The peach slices were all very soft (but not sloppy) and didn't require very much chewing. They were quite sweet and very juicy. In my opinion they were just as good as higher priced brands and even better than fresh peaches (and a lot less effort and mess than fresh peaches too!).
The only real downsides of this product are:
- The unattractive tin and no ringpull.
- The peach slices are all different shapes and sizes, which isn't a problem to me but might be a problem for somebody that wants to use the peach slices in cooking (eg. for peach tarts).
- The peach slices don't come in fruit juice.
The peaches should be stored in a cool, dry place and once opened should be kept in the fridge and consumed within 2 days. It is also recommended that each serving size should be half a tin, though I could quite happily munch my way through the whole tin.

- 14/11/09 A good bargain, I would say.
There isn't much you can buy these days that taste so good, for 27p:-) |

- 22/10/09 I serve them over fluffy American style pancakes after draining the syrup and stirring some vanilla essence into it before pouring over the pancakes. |
