Advantages: It tastes great, its cheap
Disadvantages: The fat content is a but hgih
Just before Christmas a friend of mine recommended Tesco Value Soft Cheese to me knowing how much I love cheese in almost all its forms! As we are all trying to save a few pennies at the moment I thought I would try it and then report back to you all so we could all enjoy the savings!
200g of Tesco Value Soft Cheese costs just 45p as opposed to 79p for 250g of the standard full fat version or 81p for 250g of the Light Choices Extra Light version.
The cheese comes in an oblong plastic container which isn't very deep. It has a clear plastic lid through which you can see the peel off foil lid below. The design on the foil is very simple as with all the Tesco Value items. There is the red and blue logo with the 'value' stripes, the words Soft Cheese 23% fat soft cheese and the now common nutritional information shown per serving and as a proportion of the recommended daily allowance.
When I peeled back the foil the white cheese smelled very creamy and looked nice and smooth.
I got some on my knife and spread it onto my favourite biscuits. The taste is excellent. It is very smooth and creamy but not in the slightest bit greasy. The taste is distinct without being too strong if you know what I mean and it is delicious! I have found that some of the cheaper cream cheeses are grainy but not this one! In fact it is the smoothest, creamiest tasting cream cheese that I have ever tasted.
Now I will tell you the bad news. The creamy taste comes at a price - not a financial price but a price in fat content!
The fat content of Tesco Value Soft Cheese is 23g per 100g. For comparison Tesco Full Fat Soft Cheese has 26g of fat per 100g BUT the Tesco Light Choices Extra Light Soft Cheese only has 6g of fat per 100g! So you see the value version has almost four times the fat of the Light Choices version but as it is something I only eat occasionally I'll risk it! LOL!
The full nutritional information per 100g of the product is as follows:
Calories 245
Protein 4.7g
Carbohydrate 3.8g
Of which sugars 2.6g
Fat 23g
Of which saturated 14.4g
Fibre 0.2g
Salt 0.6g
I think it's worth trying any of the value versions at the moment - the time for snobbery about labels is over (for me it never began but that's neither here nor there!) and the time for saving is upon us.
In the last month I have discovered peanuts, cashews and now cream cheese and I am on the lookout for any more that might be useful to me!
Summary: A great cheap cream cheese!
