Advantages: None really
Disadvantages: Not very tasty, has never seen a strawberry
I'm generally a big fan of Value options, in my experience you're getting 90% of the quality for 50% (or less) of the cost. However, there are definitely some types of food where i don't think this applies. I purchased the Tesco Value Strawberry Cheesecake more out of curiosity than anything else, and my expectations were not high!
The cheescake comes in a 100g pot, with that oh-so-not-glamorous Value packaging. It costs 42p. Now, actually, the more i think about this, the more i realise that's not actually especially cheap; i usually buy non-Value family size blackcurrant cheescakes in Tesco for a quid (frozen, admittedly) and those are much bigger than two of these pots. So I'm already wondering where the bargain is here.
The ingredients cheer me up slightly though - basically, digestive biscuit, strawberry jam, and a soft-cheese based filling - OK so the latter is liberally sprinkled with slightly odd sounding compounds and preservatives (Carboxymethylcellulose, anyone?!!) but i think that's true of most supermarket cheescake. After all, i don't think any of us are buying it as a health food.
So, the all important taste test. Well, i've had worse, but i wouldn't buy it again. The digestive part is fine; it's hard to imagine how you can muck up crushing some digestive biscuits. The cheesecakey bit has a slightly artificial taste and the texture isn't very "clean", by which i mean it kind of coats the inside of my mouth slightly. The strawberry bit - ugh. Just some red paste with slight strawberry flavour really, it's hard to imagine any actual fruit was involved with making this! There's also a slight overall flavour of plastic, but i've noticed that before with individual cheescakes, so not sure if this is any worse.
So, on this particular Value snack, i don't actually think you get what you paid for. If they got the price down to say 25p (one quarter of the price of a full sized, tasty, frozen one) then it'd be an acceptable cheap snack if you were desperate. At 42p, not really worth bothering in my opinion.
Summary: Give this one a miss, unless they halve the price.

- 26/05/09 My husband likes these but probably only because he doesn't like 'real' strawberries on top anyway! x |
