Advantages: Cheap, healthy

Disadvantages: Can have a lot of skin around the stalk bit

I always buy value tinned tomatoes and keep a couple of cans in my cupboard for a quick meal. I had a poached egg, tinned tomatoes and toast with marmite for my lunch today so I thought I would share my experiences.

Packaging
=======
Available in a 400g tin in Tesco. I've always found that the tin is thinner than other cans. Thats why you will see so many dented cans of tomatoes on the shelf.

Price
====
Just 19p for a tin of unchopped tomatoes.

Appearance
=========
I had 5 tomatoes in my tin today. They were of varying shapes and sizes. There was a lot of rather pale looking tomato juice surrounding them. There is always a bit of skin left around the stalk bit at the end that you wouldn't find in more expensive brands.

Taste
====
I actually prefer the taste of these to the more expensive brand. They do have a weaker taste than other brands, but are also a lot sweeter. I eat the juice from the bowl adding a dash of salt of worcestershire sauce to pep them up a bit.

Uses
====
These are one fo the most versatile foods you can buy. I love them on toast and also use them in sauces. For a mega cheap and quick tomato sauce I will fry a clove of garlic and a little chopped onion and a teaspoon of herbs and add a can of tomatoes and simmer for 10 minutes. Can't get a much cheaper or quicker meal than that when served with pasta. When I feel more extravagent I also add mushrooms and slices of green and red peppers and serve with cheese.
I often find if making a more substantial sauce such as bolognese, I need to add two cans instead of one of a more expensive branded tomato.

Nutrition
======
Just 33 calories per half a can and alos helping you towards your five a day.

Conclusion
========
An essential addition to any larder.

Summary: Great Value
