Tesco value tinned tomatoes are a real bargain. They are one of Tesco's loss leaders and always available at a low price. Currently they are selling at 19p per 400 gram tin.

There is no difference, as far as I can tell in Tesco's Value and more expensive brands when it comes to tomatoes.

I must admit that I have been put off Tesco value products recently because the quality has been cut on many of their products but up to now, this one isn't affected.

This brand of tinned tomatoes is no more sweet or acidic than any of the others I have tried and it's a really cheap item that can be added to meat, or pasta dishes, or simply eaten on toast.

In fact tinned tomatoes on toast is a really healthy, low calorie snack.

The tomatoes are chopped fairly small and they are a nice bright, red colour, although there are no added colourants. Some brands tend to be lighter in colour with stringy bits in the tomatoes.

I use tinned tomatoes to make Moroccan style meatballs. It's simple:




MORROCAN STYLE MEATBALLS:

Just make meatballs with minced lamb and onions and a few spices (uses beef if you prefer).

Then add a tin of tomatoes and a tablespoon of honey, followed by another handful of your favourite spices and off you go.

Put it in the oven to cook away slowly. This is gorgeous and so easy to make. Serve with rice, or do it Moroccan style with big lumps of bread.

This certainly tastes and sounds a lot more exciting than Tesco's value tomatoes.




VERY CHEAP PASTA SAUCE:


I also use these with a handful of fresh basil and some onions, to make a cheap sauce for spaghetti. Finish off with grated cheese and you have a great meal at really low cost.

100 grams of tomatoes contains just 17 calories. Great for dieters.
0.1 gram fat
0.7 gram fibre.


This product is all round versatile, tasty and nutritious. For once a cheap product is both healthy and tasty.

Summary: Great value product with many uses.
