Advantages: Cheap
Disadvantages: Not great for tomato on toast
After running out of my usual chopped tomatoes from Asda, I picked up a tin of these while I was in Tesco. The tomatoes cost me 19p per 400g tin and came in the cheap blue, red and white packaging.
Last night I decided to make a pasta dish and used a tin of these as the bulk of the sauce. When I opened the lid I noticed that the tomatoes were a lot redder than the ones I usually buy from Asda. I tipped the tomatoes into a jug and I couldn't believe how thick the sauce was. The ones I buy from Asda are much more watery than these so I tend to use tomato puree to thicken it up a bit. I decided I wouldn't add the tomato puree with these as they looked substantial enough by themselves.
I did notice as I poured the tomatoes into my jug that there was a nice lot of tomato chunks which was good as I was going to blend it into a liquid and this meant it would be much more tomatoey than the Asda brand. They blended quickly and easily and it was at this point that I had a little taste.
The tomatoes weren't as tangy as I'm used to and lacked a little in flavour. I added a little basil and it tasted much better. I suppose they were a little bland and I wouldn't recommend them if you were going to have chopped tomatoes on toast which I often do.
The tomatoes heated quickly on the hob and I thought that they may have a bit more flavour when they warm but I'm afraid they didn't. They were just as bland but I didn't mind too much as I used them as the base of my pasta sauce so I spiced it up a bit.
I am glad to say that there were no signs of any green bit's in the tin which I was glad about. I hate it when it is clear that the tomatoes are such low quality that you can see it plain and clear.
As far as the pasta sauce goes they were great. The tomatoes were really thick and clung to the pasta really well. I found that when I used the Asda ones on there own, the pasta could have just as well have had nothing on them because the sauce fell to the bottom of the pan.
I would definately recommend these if you were going to use them in a lasagne or bolognaise but don't buy them if you fancy a nice plate of chopped tomatoes on toast because you may be disappointed.
Summary: Another bargain!
