Advantages: Cheap and tasty
Disadvantages: Can lack juice
~What is it~
Tesco value chopped tomatoes. Just tomatoes and tomato juice (oh and citric acid). It costs 35p per 400g can at Tesco.com
~Is it nice?~
I buy these regularly to make dinners like Bolognese and Lasagna, it's a cheap alternative to using fresh tomatoes, or spending much more, for example Napolina chopped tomatoes, the same amount will cost you 99p. That's 64p extra, and for what? Tesco value taste just fine, sometimes there are some stalk bits in them, but it doesn't affect the recipe much.
Occasionally I find there is a lack of juice in the can, it can be a bit dry, which is why I may use the whole tinned tomatoes instead, but then I need to puree them, so it is easier to use these.
~What can you use them for?~
Well I make Bolognese and Lasagna, both very easy to make, and need very few ingredients,
Recipe for Bolognese - Serves 4
400g Pasta or Spaghetti
1 Onion
1 tsp garlic
1 can of Value Chopped tomatoes
300g beef mince
1 tsp basil
Parmesan
1: Cook the pasta for about 12 minutes until tender or al dente depending on how you like it
2: Heat some oil in a frying pan, fry up the onion and garlic, until lightly brown. Add the mince and cook over a low heat until browned.
3: Add the can of chopped tomatoes and basil and simmer until sauce is thick
4: Season to taste and sprinkle with parmesan.
5: Eat
Cheap can be good
Summary: A good value product
