Advantages: Tastes great
Disadvantages: glass bottle, not available in plastic
I recently decided to try this Tesco Value Tomato Ketchup for the first time recently after my Heinz Tomato Ketchup ran out. In the past, I have been a loyal customer to the Heinz corporation, using my ketchup on pretty much anything I cook, whether it be chips, mash potatoes, steak, chicken and even my vegetables (very unhealthy I know!) so it was a fairly big step for me to venture into the world of value ketchup. The result surprised me enormously, I was not expecting to like it as much as I did, the taste is very different to Heinz and to be fair I still prefer the branded products, but as a sauce to pour over bland food it is not bad at all.
As with all of the Tesco value range the best thing about them has to always be the price, and can save you a small fortune in the long run by downgrading a lot of your shopping list to the cheaper brands. The Tesco Value Tomato Ketchup currently costs 38p for a 570g jar, this compares to the Heinz variety of £2.00 for the same quantity bottle, however the Heinz bottle is a plastic squeeze bottle which means easier pouring. This is one of the main drawbacks with the Tesco Value bottle is that it is only available in a single size container and only available in a glass container.
There are other Tesco tomato ketchup ranges which cost quite a bit more money, with the equivalent size of 567g costing £1.43 for a glass jar or £1.88 for a 470g plastic squeeze bottle. To be perfectly honest with you all, I believe that the Value Ketchup is actually nicer than the more expensive Tesco version and would buy it even if they cost the same amount, but this is obviously down to personal preference.
The calorific value of this value ketchup is fairly low, being approximately 20 calories for a 15g serving (about a tea spoon) and contains only trace amounts of fat for those on a diet. It also states that the sauce was prepared with 115g of tomatoes per 100g of sauce.
Overall, this sauce is excellent value for money and tastes great. I would definitely recommend this ketchup to anyone to try at least once and will be buying it time and time again. I hope you like it as much as I do, so I give it 5 stars out of 5. Fantastic product, go buy!
Summary: Fantastic!

- 07/10/09 Given that my recycling wheelie bin recycles glass, this wouldn't be a disadvantage for me anymore... Stopped buying Heinz Ketchup a while ago when just like you, I found good alternatives at a much cheaper price!! Good review :-) |
