I have to admit I am cheap, if I can find a cheaper way of doing something I generally will, most recently this has involved swapping some of my weekly shopping items for tesco value products, its worked well with Chopped Tomatoes being great, Tortilla Chips being pretty damned good and the choc ices and milk lollies having a real taste that i've enjoyed as much as their more illustrious named competitors, so I tried this Bacon and realised sometimes its worth paying more for a bit of taste and quality. Tesco Value Unsmoked Bacon is £1.25 for a 250g pack which consists of around 8 rashers, the pack is a piece of plastic with the generic Tesco Value symbol on ... Read the complete review

Bacon, one of the key ingredients to making a nice fry up or Presto pasta, and many other dishes. Like any other type of meat it is possible to get a range of them from premium quality to the lower and cheaper alternatives. For a long time, I have always had the suspicion that paying premium prices for the more expensive and well known brands only gives you better packaging. One day I decided to try Tesco Value Unsmoked Back Bacon, it was quite hard to notice, especially because the packaging was plain and the only thing that caught my eye was the Tesco blue and red colour scheme which does look like an eyesore, when you compare it to the more ... I had planned to make a bacon quiche last weekend and when my brother heard this he asked me to make him a couple and also mentioned that my nephew, on his way back to university the following day, would appreciate one to take back with him ensuring that he and his impoverish flatmates ate properly for at least a day or two. I ended up making seven quiches in total and as I like to use at least two or three rashers in each one this would have worked out very expensive if using my usual Walls bacon. I was undecided about actually buying the Tesco Value Unsmoked Bacon as although the meat itself didn't look too fatty the whole lot was tightly shrink wrapped ... Read the complete review

I have noticed that everytime I visit Tesco`s more and more people are scrutinising the prices carefully. Heads are bowed over the shelves and you can sense that everyone is doing calculations in their heads. Bacon used to be a reasonably priced meal, bacon and eggs with a slice of bread and butter is lovely and tasty. But just take a look at the price of it lately! If you are looking at the well known brands it has almost become a luxury meal. I have to be honest and say that if I am making a quiche then I buy the Tesco cooking bacon, at the end of the day it is only going to be snipped into small pieces to put in the pastry case. We love a bacon ... Read the complete review

I have just eaten some of this awful, tough, chewy and cheap bacon. I bought it at the weekend for about a pound and thought I'd got a real bargain but not so. The packaging is just plastic wrap, no solid carton or anything but who cares about that if the bacon is nice? There are about 8 slices in the pack, much the same as other brands and I defrosted it exactly as I always do, tried to peel a slice off and it broke into pieces and then noticed the huge amount of the slice that was pure fat. About a quarter of each slice is actually fat so if like me you remove the fat before cooking you are left with very little bacon. I make a tomato, ... Read the complete review
