Advantages: Cheap, Taste quite good,
Disadvantages: Does not stay in one piece
Bacon, one of the key ingredients to making a nice fry up or Presto pasta, and many other dishes. Like any other type of meat it is possible to get a range of them from premium quality to the lower and cheaper alternatives.
For a long time, I have always had the suspicion that paying premium prices for the more expensive and well known brands only gives you better packaging.
One day I decided to try Tesco Value Unsmoked Back Bacon, it was quite hard to notice, especially because the packaging was plain and the only thing that caught my eye was the Tesco blue and red colour scheme which does look like an eyesore, when you compare it to the more attractive packaging by premium brands. I did not spent a lot of time considering the product because I was in a rush.
After opening the packaging, I noticed that the colour of the meat did look reasonably good, there was a decent amount of fat which is quite important if you enjoy eating them, despite how unhealthy they are. However there are random strips of fat, which was not too bad.
When I was frying them, I found it hard to flip them around without them breaking off into pieces. This was quite annoying due to the fact that, I don't like eat bacon in small pieces because it is hard to enjoy.
Furthermore, it was quite a challenge to cook the bacon itself because it did not cook evenly. The corners of bacon are not the best parts either, because they are fully of fat.
The price of this bacon is probably the best thing about the product, at less than one and a half pound for a pack, which is enough for a single serving depending on what meal you are cooking and how much you plan on eating.
Summary: It has more fat, which is fine if you prefer Bacon this way
