Advantages: Taste great, cheaper than Weetabix, easily available, good for you

Disadvantages: None for me

I have always been a great fan of Weetabix and have recently tried the Asda brand - Asda Wheat Bisks - and enjoyed them very much, so when I came to order my shopping from Tesco.com the other week I decided to try their own brand version of Weetabix to see if the biscuits are as good as the Asda ones.

The first thing that I noticed was the fact that there was a choice of Tesco brand biscuits:
Tesco Value Wheat Biscuits 36 for 80p
Tesco Wheat Biscuits 24 for £1.15
Tesco Light Choices Wheat Biscuits 48 for £2.15

I decided to try the Tesco Wheat Biscuits at £1.15 for 24 biscuits as compared to Weetabix which cost £1.78 for 24 biscuits.

The Packaging

The Wheat Biscuits come in a simply designed golden yellow cardboard box with the words Tesco 24 Wheat Biscuits on the front together with a picture of two of the biscuits - which look exactly like Weetabix - in a bowl with milk, strawberries and blackcurrants. The front of the box also shows the nutritional content expressed as a percentage of recommended daily allowance.

Inside the box the biscuits are then wrapped in two packs of 12 in white greaseproof paper just as Weetabix are.

This means that whilst you are eating your way through the first 12 the remaining biscuits are still sealed and airtight to retain their freshness.

For those of you who like a full description - the biscuits themselves are oblong in shape with rounded ends and are about 5 inches long and about 2 inches wide.

The Content

As with Weetabix this is a high fibre, low fat cereal, which is fortified with iron, vitamins B1 and B2, niacin and folic acid. As you may know folic acid is great for you if you're trying for a family.

The whole grain in Wheat Biscuits is a great source of fibre, which not only helps to keep you regular; it helps to maintain a healthy heart too and it will keep you feeling fuller for longer.

Wheat Biscuits can be eaten by babies as young as 6 months old (in small quantities) as they can be mashed to a pulp when the milk is added.

A serving of two biscuits will only set you back 190 calories when eaten with 125ml of semi skimmed milk and they are suitable for vegetarians too. Each biscuit on its own contains about 65 calories.

The Taste

As with the Asda brand Bisks I do wonder whether the Tesco Biscuits are actually made by Weetabix and boxed in Tesco boxes and opening the box did nothing to change my opinion. The biscuits look and smell identical to Weetabix.

I put two of them in my bowl, added the skimmed milk and began to eat. They tasted exactly the same as Weetabix too! The taste is just a simple, enjoyable wheaty taste - sorry I can't describe it any better than that!

I eat mine without sugar and often slice a banana, peach or nectarine on top or even strawberries when they're in season - that's a real treat!

The Nutritional Information

The nutritional information for 100g of the Tesco Wheat Biscuits is as follows:
Calories 340
Carbohydrates 68.4g
Of which sugars 4.4g
Fat 2g
Of which saturates 0.6g
Fibre 10g
Salt 0.5g

It is interesting to note that this information, together with the ingredients of the Wheat Biscuits is identical to that of both Weetabix and Asda Wheat Bisks. This definitely makes me think that they are all made by the same firm and just boxed differently, especially when you remember that they all taste exactly the same as one another too.

The Conclusion

Wheat Biscuits taste great and provide a good healthy start to the day, especially when eaten with fresh fruit and semi skimmed or skimmed milk. I have this type of cereal with fruit for breakfast every day at the moment whilst I am following the Slimming World eating plan. The milk and biscuits count as healthy extras on the plan and the meal serves to keep me feeling full until lunch time.

Now I know that whether I shop at Tesco or Asda I can safely buy their own brand of wheat biscuits knowing that I will enjoy then just as much as Weetabix.

Summary: A great breakfast with fruit
