TESCO WHEAT BISCUITS
In common with many people who are trying to cut back, I have been experimenting with cheaper brands. As these wheat biscuits are significantly cheaper than Weetabix, I thought that I would give them a go.
***What are they like?***
The packaging is a nice and bright yellow box, with a photo of two wheat biscuits with some fruit and milk on.
I bought the box of 24 and they are packaged inside in paper in two columns. On opening, I see that they just look exactly like Weetabix. I put one in a bowl with a sprinkling of sugar on (can't do the plain thing - otherwise they taste like cardboard to me!) and had it with milk. This is enough to get me to lunchtime with perhaps a banana as a mid morning snack.
They absorbed quite a bit of milk, and tasted I have to say.....just like Weetabix. I tried hard to find a difference to warrant the cheaper price, but couldn't really. Perhaps dry they are slightly not as firm in composition as Weetabix - maybe a bit more crumbly, but apart from that they tasted fine. They tasted quite crispy and fresh, depending on how long you leave the milk on.
So far, they have kept quite well, (my son and I have them on alternate days for breakfast) and they have not gone stale at all.
They also have a very long best before date, going up to February next year, so if they are ever on offer, then you could stock up on them, without them going off.
***Opinion***
Sometimes when cutting back, I find I have to hide the packaging or else, all of a sudden my family won't like the taste. With these there were no complaints either from my son or myself - they taste just like the higher priced Weetabix. I can't understand why anyone would want to pay more.
Calorie wise they contain 190 calories per serving ( which is two biscuits with 125ml of semi-skimmed milk). Fat is 2.8g ( of which 1.5g is saturated), which I assume comes mostly from the milk. It is also fortified with numerous vitamins and is of course a good source of fibre.
With some brands you can notice a drop in quality - but not with this cereal - it is every bit as good and I will be buying them again. I like them because I think they offer a reasonably healthy start to the day and to say this is one of your main meals, it only contains 7% of the recommended salt intake too.
If I am trying to watch my weight, then I find it easier if I start the day, with something like this.
***Availability***
They are of course only available from Tesco and cost £1.15 for 24 in comparison to £1.78 for 24 for Weetabix, which works out at around 5p a biscuit, which seems a very reasonable way to start the day!
Summary: In terms of cost cutting, then this is a saving you can make, without compromising on taste.
