Advantages: Great price, not a bad alternative!
Disadvantages: Did Tesco forget to add something?
As a child my mum use to feed me 2 Weetabix with warm milk and a spoonful of brown sugar when it was cold or when I was feeling unwell. As a result, even now this is my staple comfort food - even if - as many an unknowing fool has pointed out - it looks like baby mush! It may look unappetizing but it tastes just great. I promise!
I also like the different varieties of breakfast you can have with Weetabix - adding yoghurt and fresh fruit and I am also very fond of them served the regular way with just cold milk. However in these times of cutting back I decided to try the own brand version from Tesco known as 'Wheat Biscuits'
I purchased a pack of 24 wheat biscuits and paid about £1.15 for them - which is a very good buy really as that would provide me with 12 breakfasts. In comparison a pack of 24 Weetabix normally sets you back £1.78 - so there was an aprox 50p saving on buying the Tesco own brand.
On appearance the Wheat biscuits look almost identical to Weetabix - same size and texture. They also seemed very solid - other cheaper versions I have tried have always been a bit crumbly when you get them out of the packet and subsequently don't taste so good when the milk is added.
However when I started eating them I did notice a big difference in taste. Don't get me wrong - the wheat biscuits do taste very nice and there was nothing horrible about them at all - its just that they do not really compete with the taste of Weetabix - which for me and my need every now and again for a comfort food - is quite an essential.
It is almost like Tesco nearly got the wheat biscuits to taste like Weetabix and then either forgot or didn't bother to add a certain ingredient. They are very nearly there - but to the Weetabix connoisseur they will certainly notice that something is missing!
As I said - these are still a pleasant food and for those looking for a cheaper alternative to Weetabix that don't mind that they taste slightly different - these would be a cheaper and suitable alternative. In fact a lot of people probably wouldn't notice the difference in taste.
However I did find they also weren't as filling - on the several days I tried them I did find myself reaching for some nibbles at 11 o'clock - struck by mid morning hunger! A sensation I have never had before with a Weetabix breakfast.
In terms of nutrional information the Wheat biscuits contain 190 calories and 1.5g saturated fat for a portion of 2. In comparison Weetabix fair slightly better with 127 calories and 0.2 g of saturated fat for the same portion size - so are slightly better for you! However the wheat biscuits are still a low fat, low calorie option for breakfast.
Summary: Not a bad alternative!
