Advantages: Really great taste and quality
Disadvantages: Extremely unhealthy
In my mind all chocolate is good, I just love the stuff but there are some types of chocolate that are better than others. One of the best producers of chocolate are Thorntons, unfortunately they also have a reputation as being one of the most expensive producer. I guess that's because if you want good quality you have to pay for it which I ham happy to do as long as it is genuinely good quality. I'm happy to say that Thorntons Caramel Squares are really good and live up to the fantastic quality that I expect from Thorntons.
They cost £1.69 for 12 squares which now I come to think about it is quite a good deal and rather cheap for a Thorntons product. They can be bought in most Thorntons shops on online at www.thorntons.co.uk
They come in a plastic packet inside of which they are in a golden plastic tray to keep them safe and secure so that you don't accidentally smash them up on your way home. The front of the packet is split into two different colours, the top half is gold and the bottom half is brown. There is a picture of 6 of the slices stacked up which look lovely and the Thorntons logo plus a short description of the slices which says:
"12 delicious crunchy biscuit bases each topped with a thick layer of caramel and Thorntons milk chocolate." Yum! On the back of the packet are the ingredients and the nutritional information.
The squares are made up of three layers, the first is a layer of biscuit (43%), the second is a layer of caramel (49%) and it is then topped off with a layer of delicious Thorntons milk chocolate (8%). It really is a wonderful mixture as you can see there is more or less the same amount of caramel as there is biscuit which is great because the whole reason I chose to buy these is for the caramel, there isn't much chocolate on the top but it seems to be just the right amount to me.
Now on to the important parts. They smell amazing and as soon as you open the packet you can smell them, it is a mixture of the caramel and the chocolate that wafts up to your nose, yum. They taste even better than they look and smell. Lets start with the biscuit, it is neither too soft nor too crunchy but sort of crumbles into your mouth. It has a lovely sweet taste but isn't too overbearing. The caramel layer as I have already said is very thick which I think is wonderful as there's nothing worse than having almost no caramel in a caramel square. It is rather soft and will be easily squashed by the other two parts if you let it, it also has a lovely buttery taste and tastes just perfectly of caramel, some of the best caramel I've eaten I think. The chocolate on the top is also really nice, Thorntons are best at making chocolate so this is definitely going to be good quality, when I bit into it I realised I was right, it has a wonderful smooth creamy texture and will melt in your mouth. It isn't too sweet and so helps remove a little of the sweetness from the rest of the square.
These taste amazing and really are the best quality caramel squares you can buy. Their only drawback is that they are incredibly unhealthy with almost 90 calories per square. The squares are quite small and I don't see how anybody could bear to eat only one so these are not going to be good for my diet. Apart from the calories they also contain a lot of fat and judging by how sweet they are I think there is probably a lot of sugar in them not, not good news. However they are perfect as a treat so as long as you don't eat them too often you'll be okay. I give them 10 out of 10 for being absolutely delicious.
Summary: Go on, treat yourself!
