Advantages: Chocolate! Nice selection of flavours,
Disadvantages: Cost,
I had a voucher given to me the other day for a free trial size pack of chocolates from Thorntons. I like most people, will never say no to a freebie, and as chocolate is involved, I couldn't wait to get some!
I took my voucher in and was given a creamy coloured box, with pictures of chocolates scattered across the front, took it straight home and dived in, well not literally!
I opened the box to find 6, yes only 6 chocolates. Each one was individually wrapped in a different coloured foil. Thankfully there was a brief description about each chocolate on the side of the box, so I could see what each colour represented.
Soft Caramel
~*~*~*~*~*~
Purple foil
-"Rich, smooth flowing caramel cloaked in a chunky milk chocolate dome"
The caramel was very soft, but I wouldn't say flowing, as it sat quite happily surrounded by a thick covering of chocolate. The caramel was very sweet tasting, and smooth. The milk chocolate was smooth and creamy, and left a nice pleasant taste.
Creamy Fudge
~*~*~*~*~*~
Gold foil (cube shape)
-"Luxurious, velvety butter fudge made with Demerara sugar and coated in milk chocolate"
This fudge is very soft, smooth and creamy. It is lighter in colour than many fudges I've had before, it's not at all sweet, in fact it almost had a slight hint of coffee taste (I know it doesn't contain coffee, but sometimes you taste something and unusual flavours come to mind first.)
This had a good thick covering of milk chocolate and had been finished off with white chocolate stripes on the top.
Chocolate Truffle
~*~*~*~*~*~
Browny/Maroon foil
-"Silky chocolate truffle with a hint of vanilla, smothered in Thorntons delicious milk chocolate"
This square chocolate has dark chocolate stripes on the top, when you bite a piece off you find a moist, soft chocolate truffle inside, which is very smooth and creamy, it melts slowly in your mouth. The texture and flavour of this in your mouth, feels like they have taken time in getting the right balance to ensure it tastes expensive and luxurious.
After eating it you are left with a strong chocolate flavour which does taste a little bitter.
Crunchy Praline
~*~*~*~*~*~
Red foil
-"Exquisite golden roasted hazelnut praline wrapped in milk chocolate"
A circular domed chocolate covered with milk chocolate swirly stripes, inside is as described, the light brown praline contains small pieces of nuts which you can crunch on. The praline itself melts in your mouth; the flavours all mix together well and compliment each other, giving you a pleasant, crunchy yet creamy moment.
Double Chocolate Croquant
~*~*~*~*~*~
Gold foil (round)
-"Crunchy chocolate dome made from layers of milk and white chocolate with croquant pieces"
This was the mystery one for me in this box, as I wasn't sure what croquant was, and had mixed feelings about trying it, but as I never say no to chocolate, I had to give it a try.
Biting through the milk and white layers of solid chocolate, I allowed it to melt in my mouth, there were a few small crunchy pieces left which were light brown. I couldn't work out what they were, I thought they looked like and tasted like a combination of honeycomb, the flecks you would find in a 'Toblerone' and sugar. They were very crunchy and didn't soften, even after being left for a while in your mouth.
I looked up the word Croquant on the internet, but didn't have much luck in finding out what it is. If anyone knows any more, I'd love to know.
Orange Crisp
~*~*~*~*~*~
Orange foil
-"Indulgent chocolate truffle laced with real orange zest and crispy pieces"
You could smell the orange as you lifted the chocolate up to your mouth; the aroma reminded me of the orange smell you get with 'Jaffa cakes'
Orange chocolate is not one of my favourite flavours but for a review I have to give it a try.
The soft truffle inside is firm to bite through, but melts in your mouth leaving a mild and pleasant orange taste, it is not at all overpowering, there are a few crispy pieces inside, but I'm not too sure what these were or even if they needed to be in there.
~*~*~*~*~*~
This was a nice selection of chocolates, of which I would happily eat again, Yes even the orange one!
For this 6 piece trial set you would have to normally pay 99p, (43g) which I feel is a bit steep, so I was glad to have a voucher; otherwise I would probably not have even tried them.
This trial box is not realy something you can share, as for the first try, you do need to sample each one yourself. you could share the big bow though if you wanted too!
You can also buy larger packs of moments, which for 250g you would pay £3.99.
No artificial colours or added preservatives.
Contains nuts, milk, soya, eggs, gluten, wheat.
Suitable for vegetarians
The box and wrappers can all be recycled where facilities exist.
