Advantages: Different flavour, makes a change from normal mint
Disadvantages: loses flavour fast, goes rubbery and nasty!
I chew chewing gum at work to stop me from nibbling at chocolate, so I've tried quite a few brands to date! I picked up this new Trident Sugarfree Soft gum in Tropical Twist flavour to try out. I'm not a lover of regular "mint" flavour gum, so I'm always on the lookout for new exciting flavours.
This gum was a good price, around 60p for 14 strips of gum. It comes in a cardboard box which measures 9cm x 5cm, and it has a brightly coloured swirling pattern on it. The box is three-fold, first ly you open the top flap and then the other two parts of the box fold out to reveal the gum. These are lined up in strips, and each stick of gum is individually wrapped and measures 1cm x 4.5cm. You simply slide each stick of gum out easily, no fiddling around with gum that is squeezed into tiny packets that you have to wrestle with to get out (like Wrigleys!!)
Although being Tropical flavoured, the gum is a creamy colour rather than the expected orange. When you first chew the gum, you get a rush of tropcial flavour. Unfortunately, this doesn't last long. The taste soon fades, and after a couple of minutes of chewing, the gum goes very tough and almost hard. I had to spit it out after this as you just couldn't chew it - it was like chewing a pencil eraser.
This stuff does have a couple of E numbers in the ingredients, and it warns on the back that excessive consumption may produce laxative effects. Though they don't specify what "excessive consumption" is - two sticks a day? Three sticks? The whole packet? A guidline would be useful here.
Overall I wasn't very impressed with this gum as it lost flavour extremely quickly and became very hard and tough.
Summary: Try a different brand.
