Tunnocks Tea Cakes

Ia m a big fan of drinking tea and the perfect accompaniment to go with the tea is in my opinion a Tunnocks Tea Cake. The tea somehow always tastes much better when it is washing down the remnants of a tea cake from the mouth.

For the price of a box these little eleven o clock treats are really a bargain and well worth snapping up at the supermarket. You get six of these tea cakes in a box and it costs just under a pound at 80pence. They come individually wrapped in a silver and red foil and are even easy to take out and about or to take to work/school in a lunch box.

The outer boxing is unmistakable as it is bright yellow and you are able to see the Tunnocks tea cakes within through an opening at the front of the box. The box gives all the usual dietary information and contact information on the back and is plastered with useful information.

The Tea Cakes themselves are basically made up of three things and that is a biscuit base that is lovely and soft rather than the usual crispy texture of biscuit, the layer of marshmallow and then the outer coating of milk chocolate. The size of the whole tea cake is about a 2inch rounded cake with a flat bottom.

The biscuit that sits at the bottom is covered in milk chocolate on its base and to me does taste rather gooey and not in the least bit dry. The marshmallow that sits nicely on top of this biscuit is a brilliant white in colour and looks very fluffy and that is exactly how it tastes. The texture is light but the flavour is sweet and very tasty. This particular marshmallow is much more stickier than the usual marshmallow and this I think gives the tea cake a whole special texture unlike anything else I have tried.

The outer covering of milk chocolate is particularly tasty, as this really seems to be very chocolate tasting even though the layer itself is a fairly thin covering. The chocolate is very creamy and really is able to bring the other ingredients together nicely.

I think these particular tea cakes have been out on the market for a long time and I think for the price they are set to stay a family favourite for as long as they are being made. They are cheap and tasty. Perfect for lunch boxes or for the eleven o clock treat. They are somewhat high in calories but really for something that tastes this nice that is not a big problem and as long as you don’t eat all six in one go then I should think you would be all right. They are sold most places so if you have yet to experience the wonderful taste of these little gems then I suggest you pick some up on your next trip out.

Summary: a great eleven o clock treat
