Advantages: Great taste, texture, cheap, availability

Disadvantages: not my favourite

Everyone has there favourites, right? Whether its your favourite day of the week, a favourite hobby, a favourite drink or a favourite holiday; everybody has them. I certainly do; one of my favourite favourite things is chocolate and sweets; I can't help it, it runs in my family, honestly. A day doesn't pass without me having a huge craving for a sugary sweet and a week doesnt pass without me delving into a chocolate or sweety product.

So you can imagine my sheer delight when a couple of weeks ago, while in the Esso Garage over the road, a huge carboard sign caught my eye. '''ANY 8 PRODUTS FOR £2.50'''. Before I looked in the basket I assumed it would be things going out of date that they usually fob me off with in that shop, such as cheese strings and dairylea lunchables- dont get me wrong I do like them, just not when they have been sitting on the shelves for 3 months. Anyway, peering into the basket of goodies my eyes lit up, wow, this couldnt be true. Sitting inside the bargain baskets were bags amongst bags, bars amongst bars of good quality chocolate. All the usual contenders were in there, cadburys dairy milk and some of its different varities, malteasers, revels, and so on. I decided this was an opportunity that couldnt be missed and into my basket went 8 different chocolate products.

In amongst my choices was the loyal Twix. Now a Twix is not usually something i'd buy when buying a chocolate treat- I see it more of a biscuit and too be honest I dont find them all that satisfying- dont get me wrong- they are very tasty. Now if I had bought this chocolate bar on its own from the Esso it would have cost me 48p, however I think this is more expensive than most places and they usually retail from around 35-45p. So off i trotted home, feeling slightly piggish with my 8 bars of chocolate.

The time came for the sampling of the twix bar. It was mid morning and I wasn't feeling like a full on chocolate bar, so after much deliberation between the twix and a kitkat i'd found in the biscuit barrel, I decided to go for the twix and down I settled in front of the television with my 2 finger bar. The wrapper was fairly unusual- the wrapper was a foil, golden in colour and rather "posh looking". The word TWIX was written on the front in large red writing, margained in white, and then again in black. Reading the side of the packet I am told that the Twix is Milk chocolate covered caramel and biscuit. Sounds pretty tempting on first reads.

As you can imagine, a twix is not the most healthy of snacks by any means. Infact one finger of a twix will set you back 142 calories, so if you eat all of your twix you must multiply this by two and you get a rather shocking 284 calories. So yes definitly not the healthiest of snacks. Enough of that, Im sure if youre going to eat the twix your not that bothered about nutrition anyways so onto opening the packet. The packet is very easy to open, you just have to wrip the end open and pull out one of the chocolate fingers.

First Impressions are that each finger is a decent size. Not overly big, yet not overly small. Each finger measures roughly 11cm x 1.5cm. When you open the pack you are not immediatly hit by a strong smell- only a slight whiff of chocolate, however raise the finger to your nose and you get that all so familiar smell of Mars chocolate, almost identical to that of a mars bar. So yes the smell of these are quite nice. Now its time to tuck in- my favourite part.

There are many ways to eat the twix. I like to eat each bar differently- the first one I like to disect and the second I like to munch away on without paying much attention. The twixx bar is in 3 layers, or 4, depending on how you look at it. The first layer is shortbread biscuit, which is usually crunchy in taste and slightly buttery. Then you are given a layer of chewy, and usually quite thick caramel. This is all incased in a milk chocolate coating, not very thick but you can definitly taste it.

Eating my first finger I like to disect it. Firstly i bite off all the caramel and chocolate on top. Its a heavenly experience- the caramel is quite chewy yet not tough and it has a very sweet and creamy taste. The milk chocolate is not the predominant flavour here but can definitly be tasted andadds a distinct sweetness to the experince. Once youve eaten the carael you are left with a shortbread biscuit with a chocolate base. I like tostick it onto my tongue and allow it too melt, revealing a gloriuis butter like taste. Of course if you dont suck this and munch it then you are still left with a buttery taste- only not quite as strong.

Onto the second finger- this one I eat a bit quicker, and slighytly less messy. Basically what I do is munch my way down the bar, savouring every mouth ful and paying attention to the falvours melting on my tongue. The 3 flavours combined make for a delicious eating experince and usually the main thing you can taste is the caramel, followed by the biscuit anthe tail end of the mouthful comes the chocolate. Quite clever really. The textures of the twix are all extremely different from each other, chewy (caramel), crunchy (bicuit) and then smooth (chocolate). Overall the taste of the twix was really nice and to be honest I had totoally forgetten how much I enjoy these. However tehy dont comeinto my top 5 chocolate bars and sadly I dont think they will. However on the contrary I think they have now taken over from my love of kit kats and I may buy the snack size multipacks next time I happen to see them.

''Multi-packs''' I hear you say? Yes thats right, all good supermarkets do various varities of twixes. Checking out my local Asda the other day I came across some different types;
*Single 2 finger twix - 31p
*9 Biscuit single bicuit fingers- 98p
*375g twix funsize - £1.98
*16 single Biscuit fingers- £1.66
*Mulitpack 5 x 2 finger bars - £1.35

So in the long run you are probably best off buying the multi-pack containg 5 regular 2 finger twix bars. If you were too buy them indiviually it would set you back around £2-£2.50 so you are making a saving of around £1. Not bad.

The single biscuit fingers are ideal for an afternoon pick me up- wthout breaking the diet or adding anything to the hips. And the funsize ones are perfect for kids lunchboxes or partys. So Mars have done a very good job at targeting all audiences and this is perhaps why twixes are so popular to this day.

'''5 Sense Summary'''
*Sound- No sound
*Texture- smooth chocolate with slight ripple effect ontop, tough caramel, crunchy biscuit
*Sight- 11cm x 5cm milk chocolate bar
*Smell- subtle smell of chocolate
*Taste- very nice, buttery shortbread, chewy sweet caramel and milky chocolate.

Reccomendation?
In a word- yes I would reccomend these as they are so versatile. However if you are on a diet or watching what you eat and how many calories you consume I'd opt for the funsize bars or single fingers as the duo regualr bar can be slightly heavy on the hips and is higher in calories than most chocolate bars- though not too much. If you dont like caramel then obviously these arent for you as the texture and taste of the caramel is quite predominant throughout the eating experience.

Twix also come in ice cream form, similar to the regular chocolate bar, only with vanilla ice cream inside and a couple of swirls of toffee. Twix is manifacture by Mars, Mars are a well known chocolate company selling the likes of mars bars, revels, snickers and so on.
