Advantages: Nice biscuit

Disadvantages: Inferior milk chocolate

I hadn't had a Twix in years when earlier this week I noticed that my local Select And Save store were doing a 4 pack of them for £1. Bargain!!

The wrapper is a bold and distinctive gold colour with the product name in equally bold red lettering set against a white background. The wrapper also tells us that these contain no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives which is always a good thing.

Each individual wrapper contains 2 fingers of Twix which are about 3.5 to 4 inches long and are quite stubby. These treats are also foil wrapped for freshness.

So, you bite through a generous layer of rippled milk chocolate before almost simultaneously hitting soft, gooey caramel and crunchy, nobbly biscuit. A few chews later and the whole thing comes together in the mouth in a crunchy, sweet, gooey mass.

The chocolate is ok. Twix is made by the Mars company, and whilst their chocolate is passable it is nowhere near as nice as Cadbury's in my humble opinion. I've always found Mars chocolate to be at it's best in easter egg form. It just lacks the milky goodness as far as I'm concerned.

Again the caramel is ok. It too is not really comparable with the vastly superior Cadbury's caramel and the frankly heavenly smoothness of Galaxy caramel. What's odd is that Galaxy is also made by the Mars company and yet both the chocolate and the caramel is much nicer than that found on a Twix. Maybe they should make some kind of Galaxy Caramel/Twix hybrid bar.

The biscuit is the saving grace of a Twix. It adds really good texture with it's crunchiness. It seems to be a strange variation of a shortbread. It is the biscuit that redeems the chocolate and caramel and makes this a really nice treat to have with a cup of coffee.

Nutritional information. Each 29g individual finger of Twix contains:

- 142 calories
- 1.4g protein
- 19.0g carbohydrates (of which 14.3g = sugars)
- 6.9g fat (of which 3.9g = saturates)
- 0.13g salt

Overall I would not recommend this above most other sweets. But that's not to say that Twix is particularly horrible, it's just a bit middle-of-the-road. Twix is a decidedly average bar that is probably best served with a hot drink as it is more of a biscuit than a piece of choccy. If you see the 4 pack for £1 it's a biscuit tin bargain worth buying.

Summary: Decent accompaniment for a hot drink
