Although I like to cook and often prefer to eat proper food, this is rather time consuming so sometimes find my self cutting corners with some of to-days convenience foods in order to save time. There are also times when it is not convenient for the whole family to sit together over a home cooked meal, there for I often find my self cooking for one.

One day while out shopping in Sainsbury's, I had on my shopping list rice so off I went to the appropriate isle. There I came across "Uncle Bens Express Rice", it was on sale for £1.15 for single serving of 250 grams but I was quite lucky as they had an offer on of two packs for £1.50 thus saving me 80p so I thought I would at least give these a try.

Uncle Bens Express Rice comes in bright orange plastic pouches with a picture of a bowl of rice on the front and cooking instructions on the back as well as the nutritional info and a little recipe suggestion. There is just enough for one person in each pouch. There are many different flavours to choose from. I chose one egg fried rice and one Tomato and basil. It is the latter that I am doing this review on to day.

There are two ways to cook these; the first is in the microwave. Just tear a small slit in the pouch and pop in the microwave for two minutes. The second is cooking in a pan. I don't like microwave food but I thought in this case I would try it. There is no saucepan to wash this way as you simply pop the whole pack into the microwave.

On opening the pouch I didn't think there was much of any kind of aroma just a very faint herby whiff. I piled the rice onto my plate it was a little clumped together but this broke up easily with a fork. I did think I looked a little greasy but not to bad. It was an orangey red colour
with just few little tiny spots of what looked like herbs. I assumed this was the basil.

I then scooped up a forkful to taste, firstly it did seem just a little bit slimy it seemed to have quite a lot of oil in it but this wasn't to off putting. The flavour was quite pleasant but I can't really say I could taste either the tomato or the basil but the flavour was quite subtle. To be honest I think I might have preferred it, if I had have cooked it in the pan but it was quite passable and as this way there is no washing up of saucepans its not a bad idea.

All in all this product does not match up to proper home cooked rice but, is it fair to expect it to after all it is designed to be a convenience food. Can we really expect to buy something that's cheap, easy to cook with no washing up and expect it to taste like home made, I don't think so, that might be expecting just a little to much.

I will definitely be buying this again as like I have already said it is extremely passable but most of all for someone who is cooking for their self it handy although there is no way I would ever serve it to any dinner guests. Adam and Lisa (my son and his partner) liked the look of it when they saw it and decided to try some out for their selves. They both agree with my summing up and both use it quite regularly them selves.

In each pouch of tomato and basil there is

180 calories
31.5 grams carbohydrate.

There are many flavours, as well as the two I have mentioned there is sweet and sour, Chinese style. Lime and coriander, Thai style and basmati there are probably more but they are the only one?s I have seen.
