Little packets of rice heaven The ultimate in convenience food with a great taste must be the Uncle Ben's Express rice range. They are so handy and so easy to make that really nothing could be simpler. They come in a number of different flavours which I like because you really can find a rice that will go with any type of dinner you are making. Different flavours in the range include, Chinese style rice, vegetable Pilau, Basmanti, Egg fried, Thai curry, Lemon rosemary and Mexican rice. One of my favourite flavours that I have to say, goes with just about anything is the tomato and basil rice. The rice comes in a sealed plastic pouch and has already ... Read the complete review

This particular brand of rice is one of my favourites. Being a huge Uncle Bens fan i always make sure my cupboard is fully stocked with this stuff. In particular the tomato and basil flavour is really nice because you get that lovely tomato aroma and they taste absolutely divine! And there's just a hint of basil which isn't too overpowering. Considering they are made in the microwave within 2 mins, they are still really nice and soft. I actually prefer these rice to regular rice smply because of the convenience. There's no mess, it's just a case of cutting the pouch and pour into your plate. Also the fact that you can easily transport 5 (250 gram) packs into your bag ... Read the complete review

I'm not usually a fan of ready meals - I feel like I'm cheating a little bit. More than that I find that they are often an inferior substitute. I have to confess, I have found a ready meal I love. Sold in a 250g pouch it is great for one as a snack or two as part of a main meal. You sqeeze the pack to separate the grains and open it slightly before poping it in the microwave for 2minutes. Then you open and serve... it really is that simple! Watch out for the contents are very hot - the pack does warn of this but I often forget. Every grain is perfect. It soesn't stick, it isn't watery - its just perfect rice. Now the flavour! I love ... Read the complete review

Uncle Ben's rice packets are currently on offer in Sainsbury's at £5 for 5. The Tomato & Basil variety presents a more interesting option that the more simple and bland Egg Fried variety. ***Serving*** The rice comes in 250 gram packets which can allegedly serve 1-2 people. These 2 people would have to have tiny appetites, because it's only just about enough rice for a single person. Don't buy Uncle Ben's 'Tomato & Basil Rice' expecting to get two servings out of it. ***Taste*** The Tomato & Basil flavour is, at least, very obvious, even if it is quite simple and not particularly rich. It tastes nice enough, if not ... Read the complete review

Its great to have packets of things like this in the cupboard for those occassions where you just dont have the time to make or do anything. Especially something like this, which almost passes as pre made and not as a ready meal! The packets are sealed and have quite a long sell by date, which is good as you can keep them by for emergencies without worrying about wasting them. The rice's come in a packet which can stand up right or lay flat. I am not sure if the packaging is recyclable or not. The packaging is bright orange, which works well to catch attention, and has attractive looking pictures of rice dishes on the front. You just pop it into the microwave ... Read the complete review
