Advantages: high in folic acid and B vitamins, cheap, versatile
Disadvantages: sometimes have trouble finding it in supermarkets
Vegemite is a yeast extract spread from Australia. It is similar to Marmite but doesn't have such a salty and bitter taste or such a strong flavour.
Personally I don't like Marmite at all, however I am a big Vegemite fan.
It contains malt extract and vitamin B's, this means it is also very good for you.
The B vitamins it contains are: Niacin, Thiamin, Riboflavin and a high amount of Folic Acid. This is good If you are trying to conceive or are pregnant.
Vegemite is made in Australia by Kraft and has been consumed their for a great many years. It has become part of their culture. Just saying the name Vegemite brings images of Australia and their blue sky and bright sun to my mind.
This spread is very versatile you can have it on toast ar in sandwiches. I like to add a teaspoon to soups and stews for flavour. It is also good to spread over vegetables such as marrow and pumpkin and then roasted.
Vegemite is becoming more common in the U.K now and can be found in most supermarkets. Their are only two sizes available here unlike in Australia the smaller size is the most common and costs between 98p - £1.15 for a 115g jar.
If you like Marmite you will love this and if you hate Marmite I would recommend trying Vegemite as the flavour will surprise you.
Summary: A pleasant spread from the land downunder
