I'd always presumed vegemite was more or less the same as Marmite as both are suitable for Vegetarians (contrary to popular belief) and made mainly from yeast extract.
In Sainsburys recently, they had Vegemite on half price offer and my usual Marmite next to this looked bluddy expensive so I popped a jar of this in my trolley.

When it comes to aforementioned Marmite I am a 'love it' kinda girl; on toast, cheese sandwiches, crumpets, sometimes just a finger full right from the jar!
So I was hoping i'd be satisfied with this substitute!


What is Vegemite?

Primarily it is Yeast Extract! It also has some salt, preservatives and other crap in it too but the taste, colour and texture is from the Yeast Extract.
Vegemite, just like Marmite is made from the leftover Brewers Yeast which was used to ferment sugars into alcohol.

Vegemite was created in 1922 in Australia (20 years after Marmite was created in our fine country) by a young doctor who sold the left over yeast for its Vitamin B health benefits, he was then set on by Kraft to create a spread from this vitamin rich brewers yeast and the rest as they say is history!


How does it shape up to the original

I can't help but compare this to Marmite, so... the spread itself is softer and not as sticky, this is helpful when spreading onto soft bread as Marmite can create holes it so sticky! So its easier to spread and this means you get a nice even cover on your bread, crumpet, whatever!
It's also a lighter colour, its still brown but not as dark as Marmite which is nearly black.

The taste- It's milder, there isn't the sharp tang that you get from Marmite. Marmite makes my lips tingle, this does not. I think it must use a more diluted form of Yeast extract.
Still tasty but I prefer good old Marmite.

The packaging os the two are the same colours; clear glass jar with yellow label and plastic lid. You wouldn't mistake on for the other though as the shape is totally different and everyone recognises a Marmite jar, love it or hate it!

There are tonnes of uses for Vegemite, aswell as the usual sandwiches I use it in gravies if i'm making a shepherds pie or roast dinner, it adds a kick to it that isn't overwhelming but very tasty. Adding the extra B vitamins to your food in a really tasty way!
On the website www.vegemite.com, they suggest using it to marinade your food before barbequing (it is an Australian product, what do you expect; they love their BBQs!) so I may try that if we get a summer this year :)

If this is on offer again I may buy it but I prefer Marmite overall and this month you get a mini Paddington bear with Marmite jars so maybe worth paying that bit more for.

Summary: If Marmite is too strong or sticky for you, try this!

I always think Vegemite is a cross between marmite and Bovril. And better than marmite but not as good as Bovril.
