Advantages: A smooth yeast spread
Disadvantages: Is it unpatriotic?
Surely one of the best Australian exports ever!
Vegemite has been made in Australia (proudly it says on the jar) since 1923.
It is a simple yet great tasting spread that is ideal for those with savoury tastebuds. The yeast extract spread comes from yeast grown on Barley and has few other ingredients added, except for two kinds of salt (salt mineral and 'salt) and Niacin and Riboflavin also.
The jar is bright and easily recognisable with a bold yellow label that travels all around the jar with the distinctive VEGEMITE in bold white letters.
Being from Australia, the makers 'proudly' tell you it is from their fair nation a good few times on the jar and also add that Vegemite is one of the best sources in the world for vitamin b...now this I did not know!
I love vegemite and prefer it to the....'English variety'. I prefer it because it is drier in taste and texture, has a slightly more 'earthy' smell to it and most importantly...it comes out of the jar much easier and I do not end up spilling it all over my kitchen surfaces.
Obviously, a yeast extract is not to everyones taste, but it is something that compliments other foods brilliantly, whilst giving you a good vitiamin B boost, whilst not being high in fat or sugars.
This is a great spread to have on toast in the mornings and is delicious with hot or cold snacks. For those with an eye for the savoury, I would recommend adding a thin layer of this spread to dishes such as a home made pizza. The dryness of the spread really compliments the hot melted cheese perfectly.
For lunch I will often choose to have a Vegemite, lettuce and cheese sandwich, there is just something great about Vegemite that means it works so well with cheese. I have even been known to put a small container of vegemite into my lunch box for work and use it as a savoury dip for crisps or cracker breads.
This spread is definitely worth a go if you have only experienced the more familiar English variety, jar sizes vary as they do with the 'English one', but my favourite sized jar is the 280g size, which can last me a good couple of moths and is such a sensible shape that I do not have to fuss around with trying to open it. In terms of a 'mess factor' also, the jar does not lend to bits clogging around the edges or making the lid sticky.... so this is another great plus.
Now I know you are thinking about it on a pizza base right now......
Summary: Add to a cheese sandwich for extra zing!

- 13/09/09 Always wondered what the difference was between this and Marmite. First heard of this stuff in the song "Down Under" by Men at Work. |
