The next time you douse your fish and chips with vinegar, eat a pickled onion, or chomp your way through a packet of salt and vinegar crisps, you will remember this op, so pay attention at the back of the class as I may be asking questions later. Sarson’s started brewing malt vinegar two hundred or so years ago. Actually they are only newcomers in an ages old product, which goes back into the mists of time. Vinegar is probably the oldest man made product still in production today. It was discovered, quite by chance, more than 10,000 years ago. The French say it best – vinaigre – which means quite literally “sour ... Read the complete review

Not only vinegar is one of the cheapest products around, but also it is one of the most versatile. Vinegar, for example, can be used to keep your garden in order, simply by spraying it on bad weeds. I normally prepare a mixture of 1/2 water and 1/2 vinegar and spray it on the bad weeds, with a small sprayer. It is a natural way to keep your garden clean. I also use it to clean windows, normally mixing one spoon of vinegar in 2 pints of water. Vinegar also works very well as a cleaner of steam irons or kettles. I do not iron myself, so I do not have to bother, but for the kettle, we normally pour two spoons of vinegar in the kettle every 2 ... Read the complete review

Well it's that time of year again, where has the last 12 months gone? Did we have summer? When was it Easter? I can't beleive that we are in November already. Normally I would be well on my way to having all my Christmas pressies all got and wrapped, but with the last few months events I have nothing whatsoever! There is one thing though that I must do now and this I did yesterday. This is to make my jars of Pickled Eggs for my boys. I don't remember when this first started but it was way back when they were all little and hubby is particial to a pickled egg. So I started to make my own and now it just seems to have become a regular thing that I do ... Read the complete review

Vinegar do we make the most of it? Most of us have a bottle of vinegar in our cupboards and just use it now and again to sprinkle on our chips - yet it is a most wonderful, almost magical, substance and can be used for many purposes. The word vinegar is derived from the French word 'vinaigre' which translates as "sour wine." Vinegar's role in history is well documented and it has been widely used for thousands of years. The first records of its use start around 5000 BC. The Babylonians used the fruit of the date palm to make wine and vinegar. They used it as a food and as a preserving or pickling agent. Vinegar ... Vinegar is such useful stuff and not just for bringing out the taste of chips or adding to salad dressings. I use malt vinegar for adding to basic dishes - it's lovely on salads and on most fried foods, but it's the white vinegar which I find useful for cleaning. Used neat on a cloth, it's fantastic for wiping smears off mirrors and windows. I mix it with warm water for general window cleaning; it's more effective than any of the window cleaning products I have tried. The acidity in it cuts through grease and dirt leaving the windows really clean; just a final wipe with some scrunched up newspaper will bring the glass up to a fine shine. For ...
