Advantages: Great as a disinfected, cleaner and repellent
Disadvantages: Avoid contact with eyes - use gloves if possible
Vinegar's uses are endless. We all know it's a great condiment, but there are so many ways to utillise vinegars qualities around the house.
Cleaning
- Cleaning kitchen surfaces: mix equal parts white distilled vinegar and water and wipe over the surface.
- Aluminium pots and pans with dark stains: mix 1 teaspoon of white distilled vinegar for every cup of water needed to cover the stains, let it boil for a couple of minutes and then rinse with cold water.
- Cutting boards: clean and disinfect by wiping with neat white distilled vinegar. Do the same on a hob or hotplate to remove food stains and on bathroom cabinets and mirrors to clean.
- Microwave: fill a glass bowl filled with ¼ cup (55ml) vinegar into 1 cup (225ml) water, put in the microwave and blitz for 5 minutes on the highest setting. Once the bowl is cool, dip a cloth into the mixture and wipe away any stains and splatters from the inside of the microwave.
- Glass shower doors: wipe with a cloth dipped in a solution of 1/2 cup (110 ml) white distilled vinegar, 1 cup (225 ml) ammonia, and ¼ cup (60g) baking soda mixed in about 4 litres of warm water.
Garden
- Fresh flowers: make them last longer by putting 2 tablespoons of white distilled vinegar and 1 tablespoon of sugar into the vase of water.
- Patios and driveways: for unwanted weeds spray them with neat white distilled vinegar or apple cider vinegar. For dandelions spray in the middle of the flower and at ground level to soak into the root. If it rains, give it another spray.
- Plastic garden furniture: wipe any mildew with neat white vinegar and wipe with a cloth.
- Wooden garden furniture: mix 1 cup (225ml) ammonia, ½ cup (110ml) white vinegar and ½ cup (60g) baking powder in 4 litres of water and wipe to get rid of mildew. Apply this to decking with a broom dipped into the solution to remove any mildew.
- Insects: to trap flies mosquitoes and other insects place a bowl of apple cider vinegar near some food but away from people e.g. guests at a bbq. They are attracted to the sweet vinegar and will drown.
