Vinegar do we make the most of it?

Most of us have a bottle of vinegar in our cupboards and just use it now and again to sprinkle on our chips - yet it is a most wonderful, almost magical, substance and can be used for many purposes.

The word vinegar is derived from the French word 'vinaigre' which translates as "sour wine." Vinegar's role in history is well documented and it has been widely used for thousands of years.

The first records of its use start around 5000 BC. The Babylonians used the fruit of the date palm to make wine and vinegar. They used it as a food and as a preserving or pickling agent.

Vinegar residues have also been found in ancient Egyptian urns from around the time 3000 BC. Hippocrates also advocated the use of vinegar as a remedy for a variety of ailments including coughs and colds.

Caesar's armies used to drink vinegar and Helen of Troy used to bathe in it... Indeed, it was said that Jesus was offered vinegar to drink before he was crucified....

There are literally thousands of uses for vinegar - too many to mention here.

Take white distilled vinegar for example ... it is one of the most versatile and economical products there is and can be used for a variety of purposes in cooking, cleaning and gardening.
