Advantages: Many different uses, makes great pickled eggs!

Disadvantages: Don't get in your eyes, stings like crazy!!!

Well it's that time of year again, where has the last 12 months gone? Did we have summer? When was it Easter? I can't beleive that we are in November already. Normally I would be well on my way to having all my Christmas pressies all got and wrapped, but with the last few months events I have nothing whatsoever!

There is one thing though that I must do now and this I did yesterday.

This is to make my jars of Pickled Eggs for my boys. I don't remember when this first started but it was way back when they were all little and hubby is particial to a pickled egg. So I started to make my own and now it just seems to have become a regular thing that I do this time of year.

So at the weekend I went into the supermarket and got my jars of Sarsons pickling vinegar. I only buy Sarsons as I do beleive that this is best when using to pickle. This comes in a large glass jar that holds 1.14litres of vinegar and when you remove about half of the vinegar you will have your container to put your eggs in, so this doubles up as your pickling jar as well.

This is a very clear vinegar ( looks just water in fact!) with no other things floating in it( like spices ect..). Now to begin get your eggs, I find that the cheaper the eggs the better they shell as when I first done these I only got the best eggs and they were really hard to shell. Now each jar holds around 14 medium sized eggs (thats filling it right to the brim!). Take each egg out of the fridge, give each egg a shake (to get yoke in middle) and hard boil for about 8-10 minutes then plunge into cold water to stop a black line appearing around the yoke in the middle.

Now the next bit I hate as I have so many to shell, 42 in fact! Hoping they will shell easy I get shelling, pop each one into the prepared jar then cover with the distilled vinegar. These are usually ready to eat after about 6 weeks and last forever.

I also love distilled vinegar ( for this I will buy Tesco's own) for cleaning my windows, this beats all window cleaning products on the market as far as I'm concerned. It is a bit more time consuming but the results are really brilliant. Pour some vinegar into a bowl or bucket, I use 1 part vinegar to 8 parts water. Get hold of some newspaper then you can get started. Using a cloth thats been in the bucket of vinegar solution squeeze out and wipe over your windows, then screw up each piece of newspaper and rub over the windows until dry and you will have the most sparkling windows ever!!!

One problem with this is that you do have to be careful as the print does come of the newspaper onto your hands, so it is best to get the marigolds out and to try not to touch the window surrounds as this would leave marks on them, but it is really worth doing.

I think that being this Sarsons comes with it's own pickling jar and that you only use half a jar at a time it works out at good value at £1.30 a jar, plus around £1 for the eggs (thats for each jar) that makes the pickled eggs around £1.65 a jar.

Now you can buy pickled eggs in Tesco's which I have tried and they where horrible as well as being expensive, they worked out to £1.97 for a 510g jar, so mine work out much cheaper and you can't beat homemade things!!!

I'll give vinegar in general a big 5 stars as it is so versatile to use for many different things.

Summary: Always have a jar in your cupboard as it has many uses!!
