Advantages: Versaatile
Disadvantages: None
Not only vinegar is one of the cheapest products around, but also it is one of the most versatile.
Vinegar, for example, can be used to keep your garden in order, simply by spraying it on bad weeds. I normally prepare a mixture of 1/2 water and 1/2 vinegar and spray it on the bad weeds, with a small sprayer. It is a natural way to keep your garden clean.
I also use it to clean windows, normally mixing one spoon of vinegar in 2 pints of water.
Vinegar also works very well as a cleaner of steam irons or kettles. I do not iron myself, so I do not have to bother, but for the kettle, we normally pour two spoons of vinegar in the kettle every 2 weeks or so, boil it, and then pour out the water, pour again water 2-3 times in the kettle and wash it out and finally boil hot water 2-3 more times and throw it away. After all this, the kettle is quite clean. It takes some time, I normally do this when I am cooking, but it is worth.
Although I do not do this very often, vinegar was also recommended to me, in its balsamic version, as a way to relax aching muscles. You pour vinegar in a hot bathtub and then relax. Personally I found that athough much more unpleasant, the best way to relax muscles, particularly after sport, it to stay 5 minutes in a bathtub with cold water. It really works, but I hate cold water!
But what is vinegar? It is a distilled product of ethanol, in the old days it used to be produced from wine, in fact the word comes from the French wine agre, sour wine.
I like aromatic vinegars and spiced ones, normally with rosemarin or garlic. I used to get my vinegar from a farm in Tuscany, where they also produce virgin olive oil, but unfortunately I no longer go there and need to buy it in Uk from Tesco.
I use vinegar with salads only, as far a as food is concerned, plus all the other ways of using it I described above.
Vinegar is not expensive and is surely a thousand times better to dress salad with olive and vinegar than all the fattening sauces we find in UK, including mayo and ketchup.
