Advantages: Cheap, versatile

Disadvantages: none

What is so cheap, yet so versatile?

You can use it to cook, clean and even deodorise. It is your good old fashioned vinegar.
It comes in so many different types from your Malt, white, cider, redwine, balsamic, lemon, raspberry the list can go on forever.

Why is it so versatile?

Its shelf life is almost forever. Because of the acid in vinegar It is a self-preserving product. Yes there may be colour changes in some vinegars but it makes no difference you can still use them. That means that you are not buying something that will eventually end up in the bin if you have not used it in a while.

A lot of us may assosiate vinegar with fish and chips or in a tossed salad, but we are wrong to use it solely for particular things, when it has so many useful benefits.

So let us think how we can use it in cooking.
Who likes pasta or rice?

I think quite a few of us are partial to it. But, do we like sticky pasta or rice, I do not think so. So if you put a few drops of vinegar in pasta or rice as it boils, it does something to the starch that takes away the stickiness.

What about our eggs, do you get annoyed when they break and come out looking misshaped. I know I do.

So what do I do to poached eggs?

I put a splash of vinegar in the boiling water. It helps the eggs to keep to their shape. No you will not have the taste of vinegar on them.

The same applies to hard boiled eggs add a splash of vinegar, and if your egg cracks, it will not boil out of the split in the shell.

Your friend is coming for tea and cake today, but she is allergic to eggs, so how do you make a cake without eggs? For every egg you would normally use replace it with 1 tablespoon of white vinegar.

Who likes a good old Sunday roast?

Who has had a piece of meat so tough that you could send it to the shoe factory and have it made into a pair of brogues?

All of us at some t
ime no doubt. Well worry no more, put one to two tablespoons of vinegar over your roast before cooking, pop it in the then oven and wallah you will have a soft tenderised joint of meat.

Whilst you are cooking your roast you put your cabbage on to boil, and phew your whole house smells whiffy, to get rid of the whiff boil a teaspoon of white vinegar mixed in a cup of water.

Right your cooking is over and the oven is dirty, get a cloth soaked in white vinegar and wipe out the inside of your oven.

A lot of us nowadays are into having stainless steel adorning our kitchen, whether it be in the form of a kettle or toaster who cares, the steam from all that cooking has left spots of water that turns brown on them, rub the spots with drop of white vinegar and hey sparkling things once more.

Easter has just passed us by and over the easter break how many of us made our hubbys or partners paint the front room ready for the summer, and did the smell of gloss affect you in some way?

Problem solved, when you are painting put a dish of white vinegar in the room it attracts the smell like a magnet.

Who has the job of cleaning the paint off the brushes? (horrible job)
Boil some vinegar and soak the brushes in it. Be careful though, if you soak them to long your brush will moult.

You have now decided to stain the wood on the cupboard your husband has just made for you, mix white vinegar with a water-based ink to your desired colour and make your own stain.

Wash day and your child wears a white shirt/blouse for school, children/teens these days put so much anti persperant on that it turns the under arms of the garment a yellowish colour. Another problem solved, rub the stain with white vinegar and then wash it as normal.

Quick solutions.

Pour neat white vinegar on weeds that come through your patio tiles when they are in full bloom. This may take a few applications.

Put vin
egar on your windscreen in the winter to help keep ice and frost away.

Put a line of vinegar along the openings to your home to stop ants entering.

Put white vinegar down all of your drains, kitchen, shower etc .

Had a sting or bite rub it with vinegar.

I think most of you now have got the gist about vinegar uses, so I will sign off. I hope some of my suggestions have been of help to you.

P.S you can?t beat vinegar on fish and chips from the chippy even if that is all you use it for.

Excellent. It's good (diluted) for rinsing your glasswear off too, and for polishing cutlery!
