Advantages: Taste yummy, real belgian chocolate
Disadvantages: Expensive
I have a very sweet tooth and I love cakes and probably my favourite cake type thing is chocolate brownies. Yum, even the thought of them makes me feel hungry. Most of the time I bake chocolate brownies myself but every now and again you want to have something nice to eat but can't be bothered baking so this was when I discovered what I think are the best shop bought brownies. They are Waitrose's Belgian Chocolate Brownies, even the name tells you this is going to be a quality product (and also that they aren't going to be cheap!)
They are sold only in Waitrose stores and you can find them on the shelves with the prepacked cakes. They come in a small plastic box with a cardboard outer. The box is wrapped in a cellophane wrapper and inside is a hard plastic box which separates the brownies and also stops them getting squashed. They cost £2.15 for a box of 6. Yes I know they are expensive but boy are they worth it!
The brownies are made with dark Belgian chocolate and this makes up 26% of the ingredients. For those with allergies they also contain egg, gluten, milk and soya and may contain traces of nuts and sesame although there are no actual nuts in the ingredients.
If you are eating brownies then you aren't on a diet so the nutritional info shouldn't be a big concern to you. They are chocolate brownies it's not hard to work out that they aren't going to be good for you! But for those who like to know one brownie contains 128 calories, 11.3g of sugar and 6.6g of fat.
Once opened the brownies should be stored in a cool dry place. Waitrose says that the brownies once opened should be consumed within 1 day. However I have stored them in a box and kept them for 3 days (very restrained I know) and they were absolutely fine. The best before date on the brownies is usually only a couple of weeks after you have bought them so they aren't the kind of thing you can put away in your cupboard just in case you have visitors. But believe me once you taste these they are the kind of thing you want to eat quickly and probably keep to yourself!!
The packet contains 6 brownies. They are small square brownies probably about 2 inches in size, I haven't measured them and I have now eaten them all so can't give you an exact measurement! They smell wonderfully chocolately, your mouth waters when you smell them. When you bite into the brownie there is a lovely give to the brownie as you bite through the slightly crisper top and into the squidgy brownie itself. As well as the squidgy brownie there are chocolate chips so it's a lovely combination of textures. They taste sweet, chocolately and absolutely wonderful. They are quite rich so even although they are not the largest of brownies, having one with a cup of tea is actually enough. Having said that I could squeeze two in without trying too hard! Three though would be too greedy!!
I really love these brownies. They taste every bit as good as home made brownies, if not better. You can taste that they are made with good quality chocolate. I recently bought a brownie mix which I will review soon and it didn't taste anywhere near as nice as these brownies. Yes they are expensive but they are worth it for a treat for yourself and I have bought them several times and will most certainly buy them again. I recommend them to you if you like chocolate brownies and want a little treat for yourself.
Summary: A really lovely chocolately tasting brownie from Waitrose - Yum Yum
