Advantages: great taste

Disadvantages: expensive

I was feeling rich and lazy this weekend and did my shopping at Waitrose which is just around the corner; usually I would walk into town to go to Tesco's but it was raining and I didn't need much to buy anyway.

The tortilla chips were not really on my list but as with most comfy food they somehow found there way in my shopping basket.

The tortillas come in a nice yellow/red package and 3 different flavours are available; I tried the lightly salted and the spicy chilli. All important Nutrition info are on the back of the packing.

Tortilla chips are not made from potato as normal crisps but are made from maize - in general known as corn. A feeling of Mexico in your kitchen!
The maize tortillas are baked and flavoured with palmolein oil and spicy chilli seasoning and are suitable for Vegetarians but not for Vegans as they contain cheese and milk powder.

The quite big yellow triangles look already alluringly crunchy in their bag. They are advertised as 'spicy chilli' and that's definitely what they are, not in an unpleasant way but in a really tasty and surprising way. Ok, my thoughts after trying the first tortilla chip were - mh, cheese - yummy chilli - mh, there's something sweet. Ok, the cheese flavour was quite surprising but really pleasant and not strong at all, the chilli was of course the dominant flavour but it wasn't too spicy and had a really lovely hint of sweetness. All in all it's a great combination and is definitely on of my favourite flavours.

Still, they are very crunchy and don't get soggy if you eat them with salsa sauce. The best thing is that they don't feel and taste greasy and don't leave you with a fatty aftertaste.

I love chilli tortillas with mild sauces like sour cream or guacamole but the best is baked with cheese sauce and jalapeno chillies on top - a wonderful snack which is so high in calories that it's a sin!

With 479kcal per 100 gram they contain surprisingly few calories for crisps, definitely less than normal potato crisps. They do however contain quite a lot of fat and carbohydrates.
All per 100g:

I'm not a big fan of Waitrose in general as they are a bit pricy for a poor soon-to-be student but the food is of extraordinary quality. Everything I bought from Waitrose looked good, tasted good and was *almost* worth the price. The same goes here for the spicy chilli tortilla chips; a 200g pack for 90 pence is not bad and there are not many low-price options. Tesco and ASDA offer very chip tortilla chips but unfortunately only 'lightly salted' ones and I just love the chilli flavour.

The Waitrose chips taste good and are definitely a quality product and the chilli tortilla chips are just great. I'll definitely get them again but if I'm buying 'lightly salted' again I guess I'll get the cheaper version from Tesco.
