Advantages: Taste OK, contains all the flavours it claims to have

Disadvantages: Nothing special/different

I love crisps but am a bit fussy and only tend to eat certain brands. I'm not a huge Walkers fan as I find their crisps OK but nothing special. I prefer crisps with a bit more crunch in them, like Doritos, McCoys or Kettle Chips.

However I am a sucker for unusual flavours and when I first heard about the Walkers new flavour competition I figured I'd probably end up giving them a try. For anyone who doesn't know, Walkers ran a competition for people to invent a new crisp flavour. Six finalists were short-listed and won £10000 each. The six flavours are now on sale so that the public can vote for their favourite - the flavour with the most votes will be Walkers new flavour and the inventor will win an additional £50000. A bit gimmicky? Yeah, I think so and unless the winning flavour is spectacularly good I doubt it will remain on the shelves indefinitely. We as a nation seem to have developed a great love of voting for things (X Factor, Big Brother etc) so its clear to see where Walkers have taken their inspiration from.

Anyway....in Tesco yesterday I noticed they were selling 2 for £2 6 packs of the new flavours so I bought 2 bags, each containing 3 flavours. My OH and I have decided we'll try a different flavour every night. Last night I opted for Builders Breakfast as I'd had a fry up for breakfast in Wetherspoons that day so was intrigued to see if the crisps tasted anything remotely like it.

The crisps allegedly have the flavours of bacon, egg, toast and tomato. No mention of sausages but when I opened the packet the smell was reminiscent of Golden Wonders sausage and tomato flavoured crisps. A few folk have commented on the egg smell but I didn't get this. However on tasting my first crisp there were definite strong flavour of eggs and tomato ketchup. As I made my way through the pack I could pick up the taste of smoky bacon crisps and a buttery taste which was similar to buttered toast.

These crisps were OK. I've read some very positive and some very negative reviews on them but I think I'm on the fence to be honest. They tasted alright but I did find that the egg taste was a bit strong at times. Egg flavoured crisps do not appeal and I think that if this is the eventual winner they might want to tone down the egg flavouring a bit. Apart from that the taste was pleasant enough and I found that all the flavours that were alleged to be there, were there.

But is this really that innovative? The egg and toast flavours are a bit different but otherwise these crisps are similar to smoky bacon, tomato ketchup or sausage and tomato. And to be honest if I fancied a crisp in this vein I'd probably go for one of those flavours than go for these again.

As I said, they've had mixed reviews but I would recommend trying them for yourself. Only one flavour will remain on the shelves so try the rest of them while you can. These crisps are OK; they're edible but nothing special and I'd be surprised if they won.

Onion bhaji flavour tonight....

Summary: OK but doubt they'll win
