Advantages: Tasty; low fat; non greasy
Disadvantages: Not always available
Can't remember why I decided that buying a multipack of mango and chilli flavoured crisps was a good idea but I'm glad I did.
These crisps are part of Walkers Baked range, which contains 70% fat, and is the first (and hopefully not only) adventurous flavour in the range. They are packaged in a pale orange bag which stands out from the other packets.
Walkers baked crisps are not made from sliced of potato (at least from what I can gather) but are twice baked potato flakes. What this means is that you have a ridged, thicker than usual, very crunchy crisp to enjoy. I don't think this way of making crisps is that unusual I guess Squares, Discos and a good few others are made this way too. Baking them rather than frying them means they are much less greasy as well as reducing the fat content.
I was suprised to find out that these crisps were flavoured with real dried mango and chilli, you can even see specks of chilli powder on the crisps. The flavour is not as fruity as the name would suggest. Each crisp has a tangy initial flavour followed by a kick (although a relatively gentle one) of chilli. You are not going to need to gulp down water with these crisps but the flavour is strong enough to be noticeable. And the flavour is consistent in each bag. It is definitely a flavour that you'd expect to find in the high end, large bags of crisps.
And while you're enjoying the taste of these crisps you don't have to panic about your waistline with only 98cals per bag and 2g of fat (0.3g of saturated fat). These crisps are suitable for vegetarians and coeliacs, but it doesn't say they're okay for vegans - not sure why.
A 6 bag multipack cost around £1.40 in supermarkets but they seem to be included frequently in multibuy offers. This flavour is not always available in supermarkets.
If you'd asked me a few months ago what my favourite flavour of crisps was I'd have said salt and vinegar, but in mango and chilli I think there's a new contender for my favourite flavour.
Lets hope the Baked range keeps extending with flavours of this quality.
Summary: A high end flavoured healthy crisp
