Advantages: Crunchier than ordinary crisps., 33% less fat than ordinary Walkers
Disadvantages: A bit synthetic tasting., A bit salty tasting.
I realised yesterday that I was getting old. Munching away on a packet of Walker's Square I turned all reflective (as you do) and realised that I could remember these crisps when they were made by Smiths and weren't packaged in foil-type bags! Oh my word! It was a startling revelation...I'm getting ancient!
Anyway, back to the pressing issue. Squares are on sale in most newsagents and supermarkets for around 32p a bag and are available in Salt and Vinegar, Cheese and Onion and Ready Salted flavours, in blue, yellow and red bags respectively. I've always been particularly fond of the Cheese and Onion flavour and so it's that I'll be reviewing.
The Cheese and Onion Square packet is covered in yellow and green squares and resembles a psychadelic chess board and has Squares written over the packet in large angular writing, in case you're still unsure of just what you're looking at!
Funnilly enough, the crisps themselves are actually square...would you believe it?! So how do they taste? Well, they are harder and crunchier than ordinary crisps and have a rougher texture, for a start. They aren't as greasy as some brands of crisps available on the market, so you can usually eat a packet without having to wipe your hands on the bag of some unsuspecting person's jacket afterwards! They taste cheesy, but don't taste similar to either Walker's normal cheese and onion, and I reckon they're a bit saltier than most other brands of crisps, even though you can't see salt on them, you can usually taste it. However, they don't leave a huge long-lasting aftertaste that you can't quite get rid of in the way that I feel ordinary Walker's Cheese and Onion do. I think Squares are a bit of an acquired taste, and I'd be lying if I said they didn't taste just a wee bit synthetic, but I personally find them really moreish.
Importantly, for those trying to watch your waistlines, there is apparently 33% less fat in these than there is in ordinary Walkers. So on that note, how does the nutritional information go. Well, here it is (per pack):
Energy: 448kj/106 kcal
Protein: 1.5g
Carbohydrate: 15g
of which sugars: 1.4g
Fat: 4.5
of which saturates: 2.3g
Fibre: 0.4g
Sodium: 0.4g
I think it's worth forking out a few pence to try these out, at least, even though they may not be to everyone's taste, and there's always Salt and Vinegar or Ready Salted if you don't like the Cheese and Onion!
