Advantages: Very strong flavour, good texture, tasty
Disadvantages: Might be overpowering, a little expensive for the pack size.
I was quite intrigued by this flavour when Walkers first brought it out, and being an onion fan I do quite like them. Each bag weighs 34.5g and can be found in most Supermarkets (I got mine from Morrisons) for around 40p. Although Walkers crisps are currently on a '3 for £1' off at Morrisons, which is handy if you buy the single bags.
The crisps come in a light green foil bag with the original Walkers logo on the front, and the flavour title along with a stock photo of some crisps. At the bottom of the pack is the nutritional info for 1 bag and a sign which states that Walkers are working with the Carbon Trust, and the carbon footprint for each pack is 80g.
When you open the bag, it's just over half full and most of the crisps are of a decent size. Straight away you can notice the tangy onion smell wafting from within, and be prepared to raise a few noses if you're eating these in public!
The crisps are lovely and crunchy. The onion flavour has been done very well, it's tangy, sharp and a little salty, you get a very onion-y after taste after every few crisps, and the flavour is strong. I think this may be one of the flavours of crisps which genuinely do taste more like their real flavour, rather than a 'crisp' version, which I like, they taste very authentic. There is also a fair amount of salt in these, so be prepared to have onion flavoured salt on your fingers after tucking into these.
A big warning for these crisps, is that they are very strong, hence why I'd advise to have lots of mints or clean your teeth after, otherwise you're left with pickled onion breath for quite some time after - no too pleasant!
'With it's sharp tanginess, it's a brave spud that volunteers to become picked for a packet of Walkers Pickled Onion flavour crisps! And it takes an equally brave crisp lover to eat them. So we raise out spades in honour of you and our daring home-grown spuds, and wish you tears on pickled onion joy!'
Nutritional Info per bag:
179 kcal (9% RDA)
0.4g Sugar (<1% RDA)
11.3g Fat (16% RDA)
0.8g Saturates (4% RDA)
0.53g Salt (9% RDA)
So as you can see they're pretty high in fat, which is never nice too see, but the definitely make a great occasional treat, and I don't feel too guilty about having the odd pack! Also, the crisps contain no MSG, preservatives or artificial colours and are suitable for veggies and coeliacs. They're baked in Sunseed oil which is Walkers new healthy take on Sunflower oil, and contains less saturates which gets the thumbs up from me!
Overall, I'd recommend these crisps to anyone who loves pickled onions, or strong flavour, otherwise they might not be for you. I really liked them and will probably have another pack some time in the future, but they're not a crisps I'd have too regularly as the flavour is very strong!
Summary: 9/10!

- 05/11/09 Nice I prefer spring onion to these as they are a bit harsh tasting. |
