Advantages: Tastes good

Disadvantages: Not a good as old fashioned salt & vinegar!

Normally I'm quite conservative when it comes to my crisp choices. My favourites have always been Salt & Vinegar and Ready Salted with the occasional foray into Prawn Cocktail territory. I was in my local Home Bargains last week and they were selling the larger pack for only 15p each so I bought a few packets to try.

This flavour comes in a brown packet, similar to the old Beef & Onion flavour, which I thought was appropriate for a meaty flavour. The pack I bought was, as mentioned previously, the larger 50g size.

Upon opening the packet, the smell immediately hit me. It was strong and definitely meaty, although not instantly recognisable as steak. The crisps seem to be coated in a lot of flavouring and all have black flakes of seasoning on them. I tried offering one to my niece, but she steadfastly refused to even try them as she didn't like the idea of crisps with black bits on them.

After trying the first crisp I wasn't sure if I liked it or not, it seemed to have a strange taste, but after I tried a few of them they started to grow on me. While the taste is nothing like steak, I found them to be quite pleasant, if a little artificial. The onion flavouring is far less obvious, more of an aftertaste, but I found I could still taste the onion an hour later. I would liken the taste of these crisps to Roast Chicken flavour, in that while not unpleasant, they do not taste anything like the flavour they are intended to be.

They are suitable for vegetarians, coeliacs and contain no artificial colours. Like all of Walkers crisps, they are made using sunseed oil which Walkers claim reduces the saturated fat in the crisps by up to 70%

This 50g bag contains 260kcal and 16.5g of fat, so they are in no way good for you, but as an occasional snack they would be fine.

In summary, I found them to be quite tasty and I probably will get them again, but only if I find a really good bargain! Otherwise I'll be sticking to the Salt & Vinegar......

Summary: Nice crisps, but only if they're a bargain!
